Hamilton Movie Sets Theatrical Release Date

Disney announces post-Labor Day theatrical release for filmed Broadway hit Hamilton, bringing Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical to cinemas.

Hamilton is heading back to the big stage—this time on the big screen. Disney has officially set a September 5 theatrical release for the filmed version of the smash-hit Broadway musical, as revealed by Lin-Manuel Miranda during an appearance on The Tonight Show. A new trailer has also been released to mark the announcement.

This marks a long-awaited moment for fans of the Tony and Pulitzer winning show. Originally intended for a 2021 theatrical debut following Disney’s $75 million acquisition of the filmed performance in 2020, Hamilton pivoted to streaming on Disney+ due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its debut there was met with huge success, earning 12 Emmy nominations and two wins, including Outstanding Variety Special.

Now, the filmed stage version of Hamilton will finally have its moment in theaters, launching September 5 in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. It expands to the UK and Ireland on September 26, followed by Australia and New Zealand on November 13. The film will go head-to-head at the box office with New Line’s The Conjuring: Last Rites during the post-Labor Day weekend.

Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Hamilton captures the energy of the original Broadway run, featuring the entire original cast: Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos, and Phillipa Soo.

The musical, based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, opened in 2015 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It went on to win 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and took home the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. During previews alone, Hamilton grossed over $400 million in Chicago, breaking the city’s box office record for a theatrical production.

Produced by Thomas Kail, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Jeffrey Seller, with Sander Jacobs and Jill Furman as executive producers, the filmed version was shot by RadicalMedia. As director/producer Kail explained, “When we filmed Hamilton, we wanted to try to capture the feeling of being in the Richard Rodgers Theatre during that first year on Broadway, and we’re thrilled that audiences will now have the opportunity to experience it on the big screen.”

The return of Hamilton to theaters gives fans old and new a chance to experience the phenomenon in a whole new way—this time with popcorn in hand.
