The Exorcist: Believer is set to premiere in theaters on October 6, 2023. It’s supposed to be the first within a trilogy of new Exorcist films, here’s everything we know so far about the movie!

Blumhouse Productions, The Exorcist: Believer is a direct sequel to the original 1973 Exorcist film and the sixth installment within the franchise. The trailer was released on July 25, 2023, and a second trailer came out on September 5, 2023. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming new film!

The cast includes a familiar face from the 1973 Exorcist movie. The acclaimed actress Ellen Burstyn will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil, who played the mother of the possessed girl in the first film.

The movie will also star Academy Award nominee Leslie Odom Jr., best known for his role in the hit Broadway show Hamilton, as the father of one of the possessed girls, and Jennifer Nettles, who is a part of the country music duo Sugarland, will play the mother of the other possessed girl. The two possessed girls will be played by Lidya Jewett who is best known for Hidden Figures and Olivia O’Neill, for whom this will be her first major acting role. In addition, Ann Dowd, Raphael Sbarge, and Okwui Okpokwasili are set to star in roles that have not been disclosed to the public yet.

The Plot

The film follows two young girls who get lost in the woods one day and don’t come back until three days have passed. When they return, they think only a few hours have passed and don’t remember much of what occurred in the woods. Soon after the two girls are acting abnormally and the parents realize that a demon has possessed them. The parents of both of the girls are desperate, so one of their fathers seeks out help from Chris MacNeil who has been through this before with her own daughter.

The Trailer Reactions

When both trailers were released there were many reactions posted on TikTok. The majority of the viewers were excited for a new era to come out and were getting chills just from the trailers. One TikTok user pointed out that one of the girls looked like Regan from the original film and that she was getting goosebumps from seeing Ellen Burstyn return to play her iconic role.

The Original Film

This is a direct sequel to The Exorcist film, so it’s best to watch the first film before watching The Exorcist: Believer. The first film follows a young girl named Regan (Linda Blair) who has been displaying strange behaviors that grow more intense prompting her mother Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) to look for help from a Jesuit priest at a nearby university. An exorcism is performed by two priests, in hopes they can rid the demon from Regan’s body. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards that year even though there was pushback on what the appropriate MPAA film rating should have been. The Exorcist will be shown once again in theaters on October 1st and October 4th for the 50th anniversary this year.

The film will be released in theaters worldwide on October 6, 2023. Since this is the first of one of three new Exorcist movies, the next film is expected to premiere in 2025. The title is The Exorcist: Deceiver, and so far the plot is under wraps.
