The award, which honors individuals who have left a significant mark on the television industry, will be presented to Jason Segel on Sunday, June 8.
Jason Segel is being recognized for his decades-spanning career as an actor, writer, director, and producer. Most recently, he co-created the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, a critically acclaimed dramedy that returned for its second season in October 2024 and is currently filming its third. His work on the series has earned him several accolades, including a 2023 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, a 2024 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and a 2024 Writers Guild Award nomination for Best New Series.
Jason Segel’s television career began with standout performances in Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks, followed by Undeclared. He rose to household-name status thanks to his role as Marshall Eriksen on the long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which aired for nine seasons and received 28 Emmy nominations. Jason Segel starred alongside Alyson Hannigan, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, and Neil Patrick Harris.
His other notable television projects include HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty and Dispatches from Elsewhere, a series he also created, wrote, directed, produced, and starred in—further underscoring his versatility and creative range.
“For nearly three decades, Jason Segel has been both a comedic and dramatic staple on television. A true multi-hyphenate, Jason Segel has the rare ability to capture audiences both as a dedicated actor and a determined writer,” said Emily Longeretta, Variety’s Senior TV Features Editor. “It’s an honor to present this inaugural award to a true creative talent, displayed through emotionally raw performances and writing.”
Gregg Schwenk, CEO and Executive Director of the Newport Beach Film Festival, added: “From his standout comedic roles to his powerful dramatic performances, Segel continues to redefine what it means to be a truly versatile artist. We are thrilled to celebrate his impact and artistry at our inaugural TV Fest.”
The Newport Beach TV Fest, presented by the Newport Beach Film Festival, will run from June 5–8, 2025, at the historic Lido Theater in Newport Beach. As a four-day celebration of television artistry, the event aims to highlight both established and rising talent. It’s expected to attract the largest gathering of Guild and Television Academy voters outside of Los Angeles and New York, establishing itself as a new epicenter for storytelling excellence in the evolving television landscape.
