Superman sets HBO Max release date for September 19 after earning $615 million at the box office and launching James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
James Gunn’s Superman is officially flying onto streaming. The blockbuster comic book film will debut on HBO Max on September 19, Gunn confirmed on social media.
Released in theaters on July 11, Superman quickly soared at the box office, earning $125 million domestically in its opening weekend and holding the top spot worldwide for two weeks. By the end of its theatrical run, the movie had pulled in $615 million globally, making it the highest-grossing comic book release of the year until Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps claimed the number one spot later in the summer.
The film serves as the first installment of Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe, overseen by Gunn and producer Peter Safran. This new interconnected slate of films and series marks Warner Bros.’ second major attempt at building a cinematic universe after the DC Extended Universe, which featured titles such as Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Black Adam, and Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad. That franchise officially wound down following the 2023 release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
A New Era of Heroes
Leading the new cinematic chapter is David Corenswet as Superman, joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast also includes:
Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern
Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific
Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho
Wendell Pierce as Perry White
Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher
Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent
Neva Howell as Ma Kent
Bradley Cooper as Jor-El
Alan Tudyk as Superman’s Robot #4, later revealed to be named Gary
The film also features cameos by Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and John Cena’s Peacemaker, the latter being the only character carried over from the previous DCEU.
Streaming With the DC Lineup
When it lands on HBO Max, Superman will join other DC titles currently streaming, including The Penguin and Peacemaker. Its release marks a pivotal moment for Warner Bros. Discovery, as the studio looks to relaunch one of its most iconic brands with a new connected universe of stories.
With its massive box office haul, critical buzz, and a cast stacked with both rising stars and fan-favorite talent, Gunn’s Superman is already laying the groundwork for the future of DC on the big and small screen.
