Hilary Duff Returns To Music With New Song “Mature”

Hilary Duff releases “Mature,” her first new song in 10 years, co-written with husband Matthew Koma, marking a bold new era for the star.

Hilary Duff is officially back in the music scene — and this time, she’s all grown up.

The Lizzie McGuire and Younger star dropped her brand-new single “Mature” on November 6, marking her first original release in a decade. The single arrives with a stunning, cinematic music video directed by Lauren Dunn, offering fans a glimpse into Duff’s confident, self-assured new chapter as an artist.

In the video, Duff dons a gold mini dress with frilled detailing and a matching fur coat as she prepares in front of a vanity mirror — fixing her hair, applying lipstick, and admiring a bouquet of pink flowers. When she finally takes the stage to perform, her only audience is herself, underscoring the song’s reflective message about self-growth and self-love.

“She looks like she could be your daughter / Like me before I got smarter,” Duff sings on the track’s chorus. “When I was flattered to hear you say / You’re so mature for your age.”

Mature” was co-written by Hilary Duff, her husband Matthew Koma, and songwriter Madison Love. While its lyrics might sound like they’re aimed at an ex, Duff clarified that the song is actually a dialogue between her past and present selves.

“‘Mature’ is a little conversation that my present self is having with my younger self,” Duff explained in a press release. “The two of us are reflecting on a past experience and sending love to each other. It’s a chuckle, a wink, and a sense of being grateful that we are sure footed in where we landed.”

The song’s first verse pulls no punches with its vivid, cheeky imagery — “Going down on her on your vintage rug / Bet she’s so impressed by your Basquiat” — showing Duff leaning fully into a more candid, expressive phase of her artistry.

Duff’s return to music comes 10 years after her 2015 album Breathe In. Breathe Out., and she credits her husband Matthew Koma — who has produced for artists like Britney Spears, Zedd, Shania Twain, and OneRepublic — with helping inspire her comeback.

“Living with the person that I live with—who’s my husband—and just being 10 years removed from music and being 38 and just arriving kind of where I am in my life,” Duff said on the Therapuss podcast hosted by Jake Shane. “I just felt like I can finally fill in the blanks.”

Mature” marks a confident, reflective, and stylish reintroduction for the actress and singer — a perfect evolution for a star whose fans have grown up right alongside her.
