ABC has greenlit a revival of the beloved 2000s medical comedy Scrubs, with original stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke all returning to reprise their roles — and serve as executive producers on the new series. The long-rumored project has been in active development at ABC since December 2024 and is now slated to premiere during the network’s 2025-26 season.

Series creator Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso) shared his excitement, saying in a statement, “Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.” Lawrence will executive produce the revival through his Doozer Productions banner alongside Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, and the returning cast members, though he won’t serve as showrunner.

Those duties fall to Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra, both veterans of the original Scrubs writing team. Batra also appeared in several episodes during the show’s original nine-season run, which aired from 2001 to 2010 — first on NBC for seven seasons, then finishing on ABC.

The revival logline teases a nostalgic and updated take: “JD and Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time. Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.”

The original series followed JD (Zach Braff), an eager medical intern navigating his professional and personal life alongside his best friend Turk (Donald Faison) and love interest Elliot (Sarah Chalke). The cast also featured Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, Neil Flynn, and Ken Jenkins, making it one of the era’s most ensemble-rich and emotionally resonant sitcoms.

The revival marks a full-circle moment for Lawrence, who had long expressed interest in reuniting the Scrubs cast. In 2022, he told fans at the ATX Festival, “If you ever have an excuse to work with people you want to spend time with anyway, run to it.” While Lawrence now holds an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, a special carve-out allows him to return for this ABC/20th Television production.

The new Scrubs will also help strengthen ABC’s comedy lineup, which currently includes Abbott Elementary and the upcoming Tim Allen series Shifting Gears.
