Original Streaming Films to Watch This Spring!

Streaming services don’t just have your latest TV obsessions but also places where your favorite stars have new film releases! Here’s what we’re excited to check out this spring!

With streaming services being the number one destination for fans during COVID-19, they’re continuing to put out new movies every week. Netflix made a promise at the start of the year to release 52 original movies, HBO Max started releasing some films that used to go to theaters as Warner Brothers releases and Hulu takes Fox Searchlight’s releases. With all that, here’s what we’re looking forward to.

Choose or Die – Netflix, April 15th

A Netflix fan favorite, Asa Butterfield from Sex Education, leads this mystery thriller. A video game comes to life and starts to kill. Two teens decide to play the game but must fight for their own survival. With the video game being from the 80s, this promises to be a throwback thriller.

The Survivor – HBO Max, April 27th

A more somber film with a prestigious creative team. The Survivor is the true story of Harry Haft, who was forced to box in Auschwitz to survive during WW2. He then went on to have a career post-war in Germany and the United States. Directed by Barry Levinson, father of Sam Levinson and acclaimed director in his own right. This movie features an all-star cast including Ben Foster, Vicky Krieps, Billy Magnussen, John Leguizamo, Danny DeVito, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Along For The Ride – Netflix, May 6

Netflix can always be counted on for the next big teen rom-com. Along for The Ride promises to be in the vein of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Kissing Booth, and The Half of It. It’s an adaptation of the novel of the same name by author Sarah Dessen. Auden is an insomniac who has never experienced life to its fullest. Away from her fighting parents for the summer, she meets Eli, your typical mysterious bad boy who teaches her how to live. Bring on the schmaltz.

Operation Mincemeat – Netflix, May 11

Another prestigious war film is Operation Mincemeat is directed by John Madden, director of the Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love. Starring beloved British stars, Colin Firth, and Matthew MacFayden along with Johnny Flynn, Jason Issacs, and Kelly McDonald. It’s a true story of English deception leading up to the invasion of Sicily in 1943.

The Valet – Hulu, May 20

Acquired from Lionsgate, The Valet promises a warm romantic comedy to kick off the summer. After a movie star Olivia (Samara Weaving) is caught with her married lover Vincent (Max Greenfield), valet Antonio (Eugenio Derbez) is set up as her new lover to distract the press. Of course, Olivia and Antonio will probably end up together by the end with plenty of bickering and flirting to get there.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Disney+, May 20

This isn’t the Chip and Dale that you remember from your childhood. The title characters are now voiced by John Mulaney and Andy Samberg, alongside the involvement of The Lonely Island. Added are the talents of Keegan Michael Key and Seth Rogen. Chip and Dale’s show is long over and cast members start disappearing. It’s up to Chip and CGI Dale to uncover the mystery while exploring all that has changed around them.

We can’t wait to see all of these films! Which are you most excited for?
