James Gunn Reveals Superman Saga Film Man Of Tomorrow

James Gunn has announced Man of Tomorrow as the next chapter in his Superman Saga, set for release in 2027 with Lex Luthor’s return.

James Gunn has officially unveiled his next project in the Superman Saga. The filmmaker announced that Man of Tomorrow will arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027, continuing his bold vision for DC Studios.

The reveal came via Gunn’s Instagram, paired with exclusive art from DC chief Jim Lee. The drawing shows Lex Luthor in his iconic green and purple mech suit while Superman, smiling casually, leans against him with a screwdriver in hand. Though Luthor’s armored battle suit has been a staple in comics and animation for decades, this will mark the first time it is brought to life in a live-action film.

Gunn has been teasing the project for weeks, clarifying that it won’t be a direct sequel to Superman, but will still feature familiar characters introduced in his 2025 blockbuster. “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga,’” Gunn previously told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of his TV series Peacemaker.

Speculation around the story remains high. While fans may recall a 2020 animated film titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow—itself inspired by the 2003 miniseries Superman: Birthright—Gunn’s live-action version is expected to chart its own course.

DC Studios has a busy slate leading into Gunn’s new film. Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Jason Momoa as Lobo, is set for release on June 26, 2026, followed by James Watkins’ Clayface on Sept. 11, 2026.

Gunn’s first entry, Superman, introduced David Corenswet as the Man of Steel alongside Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. It also expanded the DC Universe with characters such as Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). The film earned $611.6 million worldwide, making it the year’s highest-grossing comic book movie despite a challenging market for superhero blockbusters.

Superman ended with a tearful Luthor in custody, setting the stage for his inevitable return. Gunn’s Instagram post hints that the rivalry between Superman and Luthor may evolve in surprising ways, with some fans even speculating about an uneasy alliance. For now, DC audiences will have to wait and see where Man of Tomorrow takes the saga.
