Bill Pullman & Rick Moranis Back For Spaceballs Sequel

Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will return for a new Spaceballs sequel with Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman joining the Amazon MGM film.

The Schwartz is strong with this one. Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are officially reuniting for a new Spaceballs movie from Amazon MGM Studios, nearly four decades after the original sci-fi parody became a cult sensation.

Bill Pullman will reprise his role as Lone Starr, while Rick Moranis is stepping back into the iconic helmet of Dark Helmet. Also joining the cast is Keke Palmer, fresh off her One of Them Days success, in a role that’s being kept tightly under wraps. Rounding out the new lineup is Bill Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts), who has signed on for an undisclosed part.

Fans of the original 1987 film have plenty to celebrate, including the return of Spaceballs mastermind Mel Brooks, who is confirmed to reprise his role as Yogurt. The sequel is slated for a theatrical release in 2027.

Plot details are being guarded like the code to Planet Druidia’s air shield, but insiders have humorously described the upcoming movie as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

The project has been in the works since last year, with Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) set to direct. The screenplay comes from the writing team of Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Josh Gad, who is also producing the film, is expected to appear on-screen as well. Producers include Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jeb Brody, Mel Brooks, and Greenbaum, with executive producers Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez.

Originally released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs lampooned everything from Star Wars to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Despite a modest box office take of $38.1 million globally, it has endured as a beloved comedy classic thanks to its clever satire, memorable characters, and endlessly quotable lines.

Rick Moranis’ return is particularly notable, given his near-total retreat from the spotlight since the late ’90s. The comedy legend, known for Ghostbusters, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and Little Shop of Horrors, stepped back from acting to focus on family after the passing of his wife. His only major onscreen appearance in recent years was a 2020 Mint Mobile commercial alongside Ryan Reynolds.

Bill Pullman, widely recognized for his roles in Independence Day and Lost Highway, has remained active in film and television, recently starring in The Sinner, Dark Waters, and The High Note. He also has several high-profile projects on the horizon, including A24’s Famous, Netflix’s The Boroughs, and more.

As for Keke Palmer, her star continues to rise. Following the success of One of Them Days, she’ll next appear in the Amazon heist comedy The Pickup with Eddie Murphy (releasing August 6), Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune (October 17), and Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters from Neon.

With this powerful mix of original cast, fresh talent, and a team of comedic creatives behind the scenes, the new Spaceballs promises to be more than just a return—it could be a whole new galaxy of laughs.
