The Star Wars galaxy just got a lot more star-powered!

At Star Wars Celebration Japan, fans were treated to a surprise reveal during The Mandalorian and Grogu panel, where director Shawn Levy took the stage alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni. Shawn Levy officially confirmed that his upcoming Star Wars film is titled Star Wars: Starfighter, and it will begin production this fall.

Adding to the excitement, Ryan Gosling made an unexpected appearance to help debut the news — and to confirm that he’ll be taking on the lead role in the highly anticipated feature.

Ryan Gosling is set to portray a brand-new character in the Star Wars saga, one that was briefly teased during his appearance on stage. Star Wars: Starfighter will be set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, placing it well into uncharted storytelling territory for the franchise’s theatrical releases.

Shawn Levy, hot off his recent directorial work on Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, brings blockbuster experience to a galaxy far, far away. His film is one of several Star Wars theatrical projects in development, joining upcoming works from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see Ryan Gosling’s debut in the Star Wars universe — Star Wars: Starfighter is slated to hit theaters on Memorial Day 2027.
