Ryan Gosling suits up in the first look at Star Wars: Starfighter as director Shawn Levy shares a behind the scenes photo ahead of Disney’s 2027 release.
The galaxy far, far away has its newest star. Disney has unveiled the first look at Star Wars: Starfighter, with director Shawn Levy sharing an image of Ryan Gosling in costume from the film’s ongoing shoot in the Mediterranean.
The behind-the-scenes photo, posted to Levy’s Instagram, shows Ryan Gosling alongside co-star Flynn Gray, with the ocean as a cinematic backdrop. “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #Starfighter,” Levy captioned the shot, giving fans their first glimpse of what’s to come.

The highly anticipated film is set to debut on May 28, 2027, following the announcement earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. Plot details remain under wraps, but the project is confirmed to take place roughly five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise’s last theatrical release.
Before Starfighter lands, fans can look forward to Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2026, expanding the beloved Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
A Stellar Cast And Creative Team
Along with Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray, the ensemble includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams, setting the stage for a star-studded adventure.
The script, written by Jonathan Tropper, has been praised by Ryan Gosling himself. At the April fan event, the actor told the crowd, “The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
Shawn Levy’s Big Leap Into The Galaxy
Levy, who is producing alongside Kathleen Kennedy, has been developing the film since 2022. He comes to Star Wars fresh off directing Disney’s blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine and Netflix’s The Adam Project, both of which showcased his flair for mixing humor, spectacle, and emotion—qualities fans will be eager to see in the new Star Wars chapter.
As excitement builds, one thing is clear: Star Wars: Starfighter is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2027, promising new characters, fresh adventures, and the unmistakable magic of the saga.
