NBC’s Wicked: One Wonderful Night brings Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo back to Oz for a magical TV event with new songs, behind-the-scenes moments, and exclusive footage from the upcoming sequel.
It’s officially November, and that means our wait to return to Oz is nearly over — but before Wicked: For Good flies into theaters on November 21, NBC is giving fans one more magical stop along the Yellow Brick Road. Wicked: One Wonderful Night airs Thursday, November 6 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, with streaming available the next day on Peacock.
The two-hour musical special reunites Oscar-nominated stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who lead the cast as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. They’ll be joined by their Wicked: For Good costars Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode for a night full of music, magic, and a few “wonderful” surprises. (One major omission: Jonathan Bailey, who plays Fiyero, will not appear.) Accompanying the performers is a 37-piece orchestra, ensuring every spellbinding note hits just right.
The special will feature a never-before-seen clip from the highly anticipated sequel, along with “reimagined musical arrangements,” exclusive cast interviews, and a few behind-the-scenes moments. Fans can also expect sneak peeks of several numbers from Wicked: For Good, which adapts the second act of the Tony-winning Broadway sensation while adding new original music.
For those who might need a refresher, the first Wicked film left off with Elphaba (Erivo) defying both gravity and expectations as she was labeled “The Wicked Witch” by Madame Morrible (Yeoh) and the Wizard of Oz (Goldblum). Meanwhile, Glinda (Grande) appeared torn between her loyalty to her friend and her newfound political power in Oz.
The upcoming sequel will continue their intertwined journeys, aligning even closer with the world of The Wizard of Oz. Early footage has teased iconic imagery like the Yellow Brick Road, as well as appearances from Dorothy, Toto, and the Cowardly Lion.
Last year’s Wicked soared to become the highest-grossing film ever adapted from a Broadway musical, earning 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Erivo and Grande each received acting nods, and the film took home two Academy Awards — for Production Design and Costume Design.
With its blend of new performances, emotional reunions, and exclusive footage, Wicked: One Wonderful Night promises to leave fans — dare we say — changed for good.
