HBO’s Harry Potter Series Adds Draco Malfoy And More

HBO’s Harry Potter TV series has cast nine more key roles, including the Malfoys and Dursleys, for its Sorcerer’s Stone first season.

The wizarding world just got a bit more crowded. HBO has revealed nine new cast members for its upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, expanding the roster of magical and muggle characters set to appear in the first season, which will cover Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The newly announced actors include Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, the iconic school rival of Harry Potter. Joining him are Johnny Flynn as Draco’s father, Lucius Malfoy, and Katherine Parkinson as the beloved Molly Weasley.

Fans will also see the introduction of several other familiar names from the early Hogwarts days: Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown.

On the Dursley front, Bel Powley takes on the role of Harry’s stern Aunt Petunia, while Daniel Rigby will portray grumpy Uncle Vernon. Bertie Carvel is also stepping into the role of Cornelius Fudge, the bureaucratic Minister of Magic.

In keeping with HBO’s promise to align the characters more closely with their book ages, the casting of the Dursleys reflects the characters being in their mid-thirties when Sorcerer’s Stone begins—unlike the older portrayals in the original Warner Bros. films.

These nine join a growing ensemble that already features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrel, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

HBO has reiterated its commitment to creating a “faithful adaptation” of the original seven-book saga by J.K. Rowling, with each novel serving as the basis for one season. “The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling,” HBO stated, promising “fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years.”

Streaming exclusively on Max, the series will be available globally, including in new markets like Turkey, the U.K., Germany, and Italy. While this new chapter of the franchise looks to captivate a new generation of fans, the original Harry Potter films will remain part of the core franchise and available worldwide.
