Among his expansive discography of beloved film scores and five of these quintessential soundtracks from the German composer have kept us playing them on repeat!

The Lion King

Beginning with Disney’s The Lion King, Zimmer composed the animated feature with a blend of orchestral arrangements and African choral music. While other songs were composed by Lebo M and Elton John, Hans was in charge of the score of the animated film, although he didn’t want to at first, he was later persuaded by his 6-year-old daughter, followed by his first Oscar at the 1995 Academy Awards for Best Original Score! Thanks, Zoe!

Disney’s appreciation for the composer’s groundbreaking 1995 score, resulted in them taking him on for a second time to compose the 2019, live-action remake of the movie.

Dune

Moving into the world of sci-fi, Zimmer got to work with director Denis Villeneueve to produce his second-Oscar winning score for Dune. Capturing the cosmic essence of Frank Herbet’s 1965 sci-fi novel, the film’s score is composed of boisterous drum beats, harsh voices and distorted electronic sounds to enhance the tribal, yet futuristic setting of the desert planet of Arrakis.

Pirates of The Caribbean

Fans of the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise are all too familiar with Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt’s swash-buckling musical portrayal of Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl. The beloved main theme, “He’s A Pirate,” is as iconic to the film as Johnny Depp’s titular role as Jack Sparrow! With over 176 million views on Spotify, it’s safe to say we’ve all fantasized about being a part of the crew on The Black Pearl!

The Dark Knight

Not all heroes wear capes, as proven by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s collaborative score to The Dark Knight! The superhero film brought the two respected composers together to helm the music of what is considered one of the greatest comic book films of all time! Although being disqualified by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for having too many composers, the brass-filled score took home the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media at the 81st Academy Awards. Eat your heart out, Academy Awards!

Gladiator

With visionary director Ridley Scott behind the camera for Gladiator, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard esteemed score for the historical epic makes perfect sense! With fan-favorite songs like “Honor Him” and “Now We Are Free” earning the German composer an Oscar nomination, Zimmer can elevate any film into legendary status with his music!
