The upcoming Gilmore Girls 25th anniversary documentary Searching for Stars Hollow will feature cast interviews and behind-the-scenes stories.
The residents of Stars Hollow are coming back to life once again — this time in documentary form.
To mark the 25th anniversary of Gilmore Girls, Ink on Paper Studios has announced Searching for Stars Hollow, a new documentary currently in production that promises a “transformative look at the history of a television show and its characters filled with commentary, criticism, and pop culture scholarship creating the definitive portrait of one of the most beloved television series of all time.”
The project will feature a wide range of interviews with cast members, including Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forester), Chad Michael Murray (Tristin Dugray), Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), Sally Struthers (Babette Dell), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim), Rose Abdoo (Gypsy), Kathleen Wilhoite (Liz Danes), Matt Jones (Morgan), and Grant Lee Phillips (the town troubadour).
Behind-the-scenes voices are also a major part of the documentary, with contributions from director Jamie Babbit, writer and producer Stan Zimmerman, casting directors Jami Rudofsky and Mara Casey, and Gilmore Guys podcast host Kevin T. Porter. Meghna Balakumar and Kevin Konrad Hanna are directing the film, with Jim Demonakos producing and Adam F. Goldberg serving as executive producer.
The filmmakers revealed that more than 100 hours of interviews have already been filmed, with additional footage still being collected. “The interviews that we’ve already conducted with the cast have been a delight,” Balakumar said, noting that the goal is to present “the most complete, full and truly new story of the show’s impact and legacy that is only possible at this historical moment.”
Demonakos added that Searching for Stars Hollow will explore “how Gilmore Girls came to life, why it continues to resonate across generations, and how its unique blend of humor, heart and pop culture shaped a devoted worldwide fan community.” He emphasized that the film aims to appeal not only to fans of the series, but also to anyone interested in cultural history and the way television shapes lives.
The documentary will soon launch a Kickstarter campaign to help fund its completion. A release date has not yet been announced, and it remains unclear whether Lauren Graham or Alexis Bledel will appear in the project.
Gilmore Girls first premiered in October 2000, introducing audiences to the witty and warm dynamic between single mother Lorelai Gilmore (Graham) and her daughter Rory (Bledel) in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Over seven seasons, the series became a cultural touchstone, also starring Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, and the late Edward Herrmann.
Fans later returned to the fictional Connecticut town with Netflix’s 2016 revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a four-episode continuation that reunited nearly all of Stars Hollow’s most beloved characters — and even gave Emily Gilmore her memorable moment wearing jeans.
As Searching for Stars Hollow continues production, fans can look forward to revisiting the world of Lorelai, Rory, and the quirky characters that made Gilmore Girls one of the most enduring series of the past 25 years.
