DC Releases Punk Rock Supergirl Teaser Trailer

DC releases the first teaser trailer for Supergirl, revealing Milly Alcock’s punk rock twist on Kara Zor-El as the film sets the stage for a bold new chapter in DC Studios’ upcoming Gods and Monsters era.

DC Studios is turning up the volume with the debut of the first teaser trailer for Supergirl, offering fans a gritty and punk-infused look at Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El. As Warner Bros. and DC Studios continue to face uncertainty amid a massive merger, the new footage arrives as a bright—and aggressively bold—spotlight on the future of the franchise.

The new trailer showcases Alcock’s fierce, rebellious spin on the iconic hero, a version of Supergirl that breaks sharply from previous interpretations. It’s the first true glimpse at the film after months of anticipation and teasing from James Gunn, and it immediately positions Kara Zor-El as a force ready to shake up the Gods and Monsters era.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is inspired by the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The story centers on a young alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, whose father is murdered. Determined to seek justice, Ruthye approaches Supergirl for help—making it clear she intends to get revenge, with or without her.

Milly Alcock leads the cast as Kara Zor-El, joined by Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Emily Beechum as Alura, Jason Momoa as Lobo, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll.

Ahead of the trailer drop, James Gunn hosted a lively Q&A with Alcock and Gillespie, offering fans deeper insight into how this unexpected and edgier Supergirl came to be. Gunn explained that the project was greenlit the moment he read Nogueira’s script, praising its unique perspective. He also revealed he had Alcock in mind from the start, referencing her standout performance in House of the Dragon and highlighting that this film called for a “rock and roll Supergirl.”

Gillespie shared why he pursued the project so passionately, citing the tone of the script and the opportunity to collaborate with Gunn and Peter Safran. He emphasized that Alcock’s natural blend of vulnerability, humor, toughness, and raw emotion made her the perfect fit for the role. According to Gillespie, she effortlessly captures the complicated duality of a Supergirl shaped by trauma, isolation, and survival.

Alcock herself spoke about the stark contrast between Kara and her cousin Clark Kent. Raised on a dying planet and having lost everyone she ever loved, Kara has grown cynical, guarded, and slow to trust. Unlike Clark’s hopeful outlook, Alcock said her Supergirl “never pretends,” making her immediate, honest, and emotionally exposed in ways audiences may not expect.

Gillespie added that Alcock brings a rebellious, punk quality to the character, balancing emotional depth and toughness with a raw, grounded sense of humor. It’s a delicate tonal mix—one he believes Alcock delivers flawlessly.

With its fierce aesthetic, emotionally charged story, and a striking lead performance from Alcock, the Supergirl teaser trailer marks a bold step forward for DC Studios. Fans are already buzzing about the footage—especially the appearance of Jason Momoa’s Lobo—and the film looks poised to introduce a version of Kara Zor-El unlike any seen before.

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
