Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to return to the iconic The Mummy franchise for a new film from Universal, with Radio Silence set to direct the project.
Universal Pictures is digging back into one of its most beloved action-adventure franchises, as Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to return for a brand-new Mummy film. While Universal has not commented and story details remain tightly under wraps, the project marks a potential reunion with two of the franchise’s most iconic stars, who originally helped make The Mummy a global phenomenon in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
The upcoming film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence, who previously collaborated with Project X Entertainment on rebooting the Scream franchise. The script is being written by David Coggeshall, with longtime Mummy producer Sean Daniel returning to produce alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.
Fraser and Weisz previously starred together in 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns, both directed by Stephen Sommers. Fraser played rugged adventurer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz portrayed brilliant Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan. Their characters evolved from mismatched partners to a married couple facing supernatural threats, ancient curses, and the resurrected high priest Imhotep. Despite Evelyn’s death and revival in the sequel, the duo’s chemistry became a defining factor of the franchise’s success. Both films earned over $400 million worldwide and helped cement Fraser as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the era.
The franchise expanded with 2002’s The Scorpion King and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though Weisz did not return for the latter. In 2017, Universal attempted to reboot the franchise with Tom Cruise in The Mummy, launching its planned Dark Universe. While the film earned $409 million globally, poor critical reception forced the studio to abandon its larger Monster Universe plans.
Returning to the original Mummy storyline appears to be a strategic move, fueled by widespread millennial nostalgia and renewed interest in Fraser following his Oscar-winning role in The Whale. His career resurgence continues with his upcoming film Rental Family, releasing November 21. Rachel Weisz, also an Academy Award winner, has recently appeared in Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow.
Radio Silence’s next release, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, arrives in theaters on April 10, 2026, reuniting the team behind the 2019 horror hit. With their signature blend of suspense and humor, anticipation is high to see how they’ll tackle a fresh chapter in The Mummy universe.
While fans await official confirmation from Universal, the prospect of seeing Fraser and Weisz back in action has sparked immediate excitement and hope for a revival of the classic adventure franchise that defined a generation.
