Wildly popular entertainment and social media app TikTok dominates audiences of all communities. When praising the site, we would be remised not to mention the dominant predecessor for short meme-driven videos, Vine. The so-called death of Vine in 2016 marked a tragic end to a young adult cultural staple. As we ease, or jump headfirst, into the content of rising TikTok stars, it’s easy to forget about the original pioneers of such a line of work. Well, whatever happened to those faces we gawked and giggled at for numerous six-second intervals? Read on to discover how the last five years variously impacted some of your favorite Vine stars.

31-year-old Zach King is known for, what he calls, his “digital sleight of hand.” King began posting videos on YouTube in 2008 and subsequently on Vine in 2013. After graduating from Southern California’s Biola University in 2012 with a degree in cinema and media arts, he acquired an impressive repertoire of skills as well as a creative, unique, and recognizable editing style. In 2015, Zach and his wife Rachel Holm competed in the 28th season of The Amazing Race and placed sixth. After Vine, Zach has been keeping busy! In 2016, he voiced “Muzzled Wolf” in Disney’s Zootopia and co-directed and starred in the Turkish Airlines safety video, highlighting the same sleight of hand for which he is known. In 2021, King played himself in Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered and FXX’s Dave. Zach has now found a great following TikTok, appearing to pick up from where his Vine career left off. Zach King is now the fifth most-followed account on the wildly popular app, with 65.7 million followers.

Brittany Furlan

35-year-old comedian and actor Brittany Furlan was the most followed female star on Vine. On the app, Furlan was most known for her witty and relatable comedy sketches. Since Vine’s ending, Brittany has been awarded a lot of exposure in the industry. In 2015, she was placed on Time’s list of the most influential people on the internet. Furlan has made appearances in the Netflix documentary, The American Meme, MTV’s Ridiculousness, E!’s The Soup, the 22nd season of America’s Next Top Model, and even in the music video for Pitbull’s hit song “Fireball.” She has been romantically involved with Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe since early 2017, and the pair were married in February of 2019. Brittany also vlogs on her YouTube channel and has shared a ton of content through her podcast, Worst Firsts. Be sure to check Brittany out on TikTok!
