Sundance hit Train Dreams, starring Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, and William H. Macy, heads to theaters November 7 and Netflix November 21.
Netflix has released the official teaser trailer and art for Train Dreams, the acclaimed Sundance favorite that’s now set to debut in select theaters on November 7 before landing on Netflix globally November 21.
Directed by Clint Bentley and co-written with longtime collaborator Greg Kwedar, Train Dreams is an adaptation of Denis Johnson’s celebrated novella. The film, which had its world premiere at Sundance and currently holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, has received overwhelming critical praise ahead of its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The film stars Joel Edgerton, who also serves as an executive producer, in what critics are calling the performance of his career. He’s joined by an all-star cast including Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy. Narration is provided by Will Patton. The original score is composed by Bryce Dessner, the Oscar-nominated and multi-Grammy-winning composer behind The Two Popes and The Revenant.
Described as a breathtakingly beautiful portrait of quiet endurance and personal depth, Train Dreams follows Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker navigating life in early 20th-century America as the world transforms around him. Director Clint Bentley explains, “Most of us will never have some great impact on history and yet we will lead very, very deep and beautiful lives. There’s something very special about [Grainier’s] story… it is so specific to this one person’s life, and yet there’s a universality to it.”
Critics have been quick to praise the film’s artistry and emotional resonance. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter called it a “perfectly formed movie” and hailed Bentley as “an essential American filmmaker.” Nick Schager of The Daily Beast declared it “the best film of this year’s Sundance Film Festival,” while Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine described Train Dreams as “a staggering work of art.”
From Black Bear Pictures, the producers behind Sing Sing, the film’s release is shaping up to be one of the fall’s most anticipated cinematic moments.
Train Dreams opens in select theaters November 7 and streams on Netflix starting November 21.
