2016 and 2017 were iconic for many reasons, but Billie Eilish breaking into the music industry with her song “Ocean Eyes” was certainly one of them. Launching into internet success overnight, Eilish quickly became notorious for wearing her brightly colored, oversized, matching sweat suits. She was also notable for her puffer jackets or vests over her hoodies creating a bold and distinctive aesthetic. To complement her outfits she would usually rock either a high top sneaker or a Doc Marten like boot. This era saw Billie Eilish wearing different explosions of colors, with her outfits being mostly comprised of neon colors such as red, orange, or yellow. These colors align with the palette with her first EP entitled, “don’t smile at me” released in 2017.

2018-2019

During this time period it became evident that Billie’s style was evolving with her. Her outfits started to embrace luxury as she was seen draped in brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci. This experimentation went beyond just different brands and included different patterns and dimensions. Eilish could be found commonly layering her outfits wearing things such as an oversized blazer or a matching set with a turtle neck underneath. Billie was no stranger to dying her hair during this era, sporting a light blue in 2018, but a defining moment during this era was in 2019 when Billie dyed her roots that iconic shade of green. This matched her new color scheme of neon. blue, red and green. It seems as though this change was deliberate as it conveniently matched up with the color palette matched her next album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO.

2020-2021

As we transition out of 2019 and into quarantine Billie took this time to really redefine and change her previous style. As we progressed into 2021, Eilish’s clothes departed from the familiar fashion the public remembered her for. She transitioned her overtone into being softer and lighter. Her ascent into a more neutral color palette was firstly seen when she dyed her hair a platinum blonde. Once again, this new color scheme coincided with the 2021 release of her newest album Happier Than Ever. But Billie did not just change her color palette. During this time she also switched her clothes from being baggy and oversized to a more form fitting silhouette. This culminated in her shocking social media with her vogue cover wearing a peachy corset and nude skirt. Billie Eilish’s bold new look showcased her style maturity during this transitional phase. This time period was one where Billie Eilish could be seen reinventing her image and subverting public expectation.

As Billie continually changes and evolves her style, there are remnants from her past in her outfits. She might wear an oversized suit or a matching set every now and then, but you can usually find her rocking a gown or something a little more delicate. This new era of style for Eilish seems to be an amalgamation of all of her era’s combined with a grungy twist to each outfit. This color switch from bright neutral colors into darker and muted versions of both the neon colors we saw in years previous as well as the neutrals that were common within Happier Than Ever seem like a deliberate change. Billie has also decided to bring back her dyed roots, rocking bright red at the Golden Globes. We wonder if any of her new taste is hinting towards what the new album might be!
