Sophie Turner has been confirmed as Lara Croft in Prime Video’s new Tomb Raider series, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and beginning production in January 2026.
Prime Video has officially confirmed that Sophie Turner will take on the iconic role of Lara Croft in its upcoming Tomb Raider series. Production on the new series, from Amazon MGM Studios, is set to begin on January 19, 2026.
The project is being spearheaded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve), who serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Joining her is Chad Hodge (Wayward Pines, Good Behavior), who will co-showrun and executive produce, alongside Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shogun, Blade Runner 2099) who will direct and executive produce.
Waller-Bridge expressed her excitement about the casting, saying:
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Turner, best known for her Emmy-nominated role as Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones, shared her own enthusiasm for taking on such a legendary role:
“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, added:
“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”
Based on the world-famous video game franchise, the series follows archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft on daring, high-stakes adventures. The show is produced by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios, with executive producers including Waller-Bridge, Jenny Robins, Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, Michael Scheel, and Legendary Television.
Turner’s career continues to expand across both television and film. In addition to her star-making role on Game of Thrones, she has led series such as The Staircase and Joan, starred in films like Dark Phoenix, Time Freak, and TRUST, and will appear in the upcoming Amazon heist thriller Steal.
With Waller-Bridge leading the creative team, Turner stepping into Lara’s boots, and production set to launch in January 2026, Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated projects of the year.
