Recently, ReFrame, an organization founded by Sundance Institute and Women In Film (WIF) that awards shows for their efforts to hire women and others of underrepresented identities and expressions, announced their 2020-2021 list of television shows that received their stamp of recognition for the promotion of gender-balanced hiring. Not only do these shows promote equality within the filmmaking community, but many of them are also ones that you absolutely need to watch!

Lovecraft Country

Lovecraft Country is a horror-drama show developed by Misha Green that follows a young black man traveling across the segregated America of the 1950s searching for his father. Along his journey, he discovers many dark secrets about the origins of author H.P. Lovecraft’s many iconic monsters and settings.

Lovecraft Country is available on HBO Max.

Pen15

Pen15 is a comedy created by Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, and Sam Zvibleman that truly depicts the cringey reality of middle school. An added bit of comedy comes from the fact the two main stars, Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, are playing themselves from when they were in middle school. Having two fully grown adults recreate their seemingly-traumatic middle school experiences is comedy gold.

Pen15 is available to watch on Hulu.

Mythic Quest

Mythic Quest is a comedy series created by Rob McElhenny, Megan Ganz, and Charlie Day about the antics and chaos of a videogame development studio as they work on a popular video game “Mythic Quest”. With 2 seasons already available, Mythic Quest is a show full of laughs and well worth your time.

Mythic Quest is available now on Apple TV.

SnowPiercer

Snowpiercer is a post-apocalyptic thriller set in the year 2026 and is an adaptation of Bong Joon-ho’s popular Snowpiercer film, following a similar plot. In TNT’s TV adaptation, we follow Snowpiercer, a train supporting the remains of humanity seven years after the world became a frozen wasteland and observe social injustice and economic inequality that still lingers. With thrills as well as a political overtone, this show is a must-watch for anyone who’s a fan of drama and dystopian settings.

Snowpiercer is available through TNT.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is a gripping drama set in a dystopian future after a second civil war where women are now subject to an oppressive regime that treats them as objects rather than human beings. Not only a show full of thrills and twists, it’s won countless awards and critical acclaim, making The Handmaid’s Tale a show that’s a guaranteed must-watch.

The Handmaid’s Tale is available on Hulu.

Euphoria

An American adaptation of the Israieli show of the same name, HBO’s Euphoria follows 17-year-old Rue, played by Emmy award-winning actress Zendaya, and her group of friends on the cusp of their adult lives and coming to terms with the changes growing up requires. The show expertly uses the landscape of drug-infested parties and anxiety-fueling situations to depict the harsh reality of young adulthood and growth. Euphoria certainly deserves your time and attention.

Euphoria is available now on HBO Max.

Superstore

Superstore follows an oddball group of coworkers at a Walmart-type store called Cloud 9 and the antics and chaos that ensue during their work hours. Whether it be crazy customers or dealing with a request from Cloud 9’s corporate entity, the cast of Superstore always leaves the audience laughing and wanting more. This show is absolutely a must-watch.

Superstore is available through NBC.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

A highly popular spinoff of the Walking Dead franchise, AMC’s The Walking Dead: World Beyond takes lots of what makes the original show so great, such as authentic storytelling, but adds a whole new characters and dynamics to the mix. Just as gripping and bloody as the rest of the franchise has become iconic for, The Walking Dead: World Beyond expands on what fans already know and is an excellent addition to the uber-popular franchise.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is available through AMC.
