Warner Bros. is officially heading back into the blocky universe, as the studio has confirmed that Minecraft 2 is happening with director Jared Hess returning to helm the sequel. The highly anticipated follow-up is set for release on July 23, 2027, marking the next chapter in the wildly successful Minecraft film franchise.
The announcement comes after the massive success of A Minecraft Movie, which debuted earlier in 2025 to a record-breaking $163 million domestic opening. The film went on to gross $424 million domestically, ultimately becoming the No. 1 film of the year in North America. With its worldwide box office nearing $1 billion, the movie also secured its spot as the second highest-grossing release worldwide in 2025.
Legendary is once again returning as financier and producer, teaming with Warner Bros. to bring the sequel to life. Hess, who co-wrote the new screenplay with Chris Galletta, will continue to expand the world of Minecraft, though details of the plot remain tightly under wraps. The buzz, however, suggests that there are “other worlds to build out and characters in the Minecraft-verse,” leaving fans eager to see what’s next.
Producing the sequel are Legendary’s Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, alongside Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa, who starred in the original film.
Warner Bros. also shuffled its release calendar as part of the announcement. The studio moved its animated feature Bad Fairies—directed by Megan Nicole Dong and Olivier Staphylas and featuring Cynthia Erivo in the voice cast—from July 23, 2027 to May 21, 2027. The screenplay for that film was written by Deborah Frances-White.
As Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy continue their strong box office run, the return of Minecraft promises to be another major cinematic event. With the first film already cemented as a record-setter, anticipation is sky-high for what Minecraft 2 will bring when it hits theaters in 2027.
