Jamie Lee Curtis responds to negative Freakier Friday review calling it harsh as the sequel enjoys strong box office and audience praise.
Jamie Lee Curtis isn’t letting one negative review dampen the excitement for Freakier Friday. The actress responded after Time magazine shared a less-than-flattering take on the highly anticipated sequel to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday.
The Time review, posted on Instagram, dismissed the sequel as an unnecessary follow-up, criticizing its costumes, scenarios, and perceived lack of originality. The excerpt called the film “a sequel with the sole purpose of cashing in on the fondness people have for the original movie and nothing more” and said it fell short compared to other recent sequels with fresh ideas.
Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprises her role as Tess, reacted in the comments, writing, “SEEMS a TAD HARSH. SOME people LOVE it. Me being one.”
Freakier Friday continues the story of Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan), who famously swapped bodies in the original film to better understand each other. The sequel offers another body-swapping twist—this time with a multigenerational element. Chad Michael Murray also returns to the cast, and at the film’s July premiere, he praised working with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lohan, saying, “I’ll ride those girls’ coattails anytime… you’re going to make a sequel, and I hate to say it, but it’s as good, if not better — they delivered.”
Despite Time’s criticism, the film has been warmly received by audiences and many critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a 94 percent audience score alongside a 73 percent critics’ score. At the box office, Freakier Friday made an impressive debut, opening to more than $30 million.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra and released by Disney, Freakier Friday is now playing in theaters.
