Godzilla Minus Zero locks in a November 6 North American theatrical release as the highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One prepares to return to the big screen.
Godzilla is officially set to stomp back into theaters. Godzilla Minus Zero, the follow-up to the acclaimed and Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, has secured a North American theatrical release date of November 6.
The film will be released in theaters across North America by distributor GKids, arriving just days after its Japanese debut on November 3 from franchise owner Toho. The new installment continues the momentum of a modern Godzilla era that surprised both audiences and critics worldwide.
While no casting details have been announced for Godzilla Minus Zero, the previous film was set in post-World War II Japan and followed Koichi, a Kamikaze pilot portrayed by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who grappled with guilt after choosing not to die in battle. His journey toward redemption unfolded as Japan faced the catastrophic threat of Godzilla.
Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One emerged as one of the year’s most unexpected success stories. Produced on a reported $15 million budget, the film went on to gross $113 million globally. It also made franchise history by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, marking the first Oscar win in the Godzilla series’ 70-year legacy.
The film’s impact extended beyond awards recognition. It became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film ever released in North American theaters. After its initial color release in December 2023, a black-and-white version followed in January 2024, further cementing its cultural footprint. The movie also drew praise from across Hollywood, including admiration from Steven Spielberg.
Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, who was part of the team that accepted the Oscar for visual effects, returns to direct the sequel. During his Academy Awards acceptance speech, Yamazaki reflected on the improbability of the moment, comparing the experience to Rocky Balboa stepping into the ring against legendary rivals and being welcomed as an equal.
With Godzilla Minus Zero now officially dated, anticipation is building for the next chapter in a revitalized Godzilla saga that has already reshaped expectations for the iconic monster.
