Everything We Know About The ‘Barbie’ Movie So Far!

We are less than two months away from the release of the highly anticipated Barbie movie! Let’s take a look at everything we know so far about the film.

One of the most anticipated movies of the summer is almost here! Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is set to release in theaters on July 21, 2023. With a stellar cast featuring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, it’s no surprise that fans have been buzzing about this film. While Warner Bros. has kept much of the production under wraps, here is everything we know so far about the Barbie movie.

Along with Robbie and Gosling, the rest of the cast is full of recognizable names. Will Ferrell is playing the CEO of Mattel, while Michael Cera is playing Allan, and Emerald Fennell is playing Midge. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa are playing different versions of Ken, and Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Anna Cruz Kayne, Sharon Rooney, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, and Ritu Arya join the cast as different versions of Barbie. In addition to Barbie characters, there are also a number of human characters listed, played by America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Helen Mirren, Connor Swindells, and Jamie Demetriou.

The film began production in March 2022 and continued through July 2022. Throughout this time, Robbie and Gosling were spotted filming in several locations around L.A. Photos of the two rollerblading in neon costumes in Venice Beach went viral in June 2022, making fans even more excited about the film.

While it’s hard to know what the Barbie movie is actually about, the most recent trailer did drop some hints. The trailer shows Barbie in some trouble when she starts experiencing cold showers, falling off her roof, and her heels are “on the ground.” Barbie seems to be having an existential crisis, pushing her to travel to the real world and discover the truth about it. Many fans are comparing these plot details to The Truman Show or even The Matrix.

Barbie isn’t the first big film Greta Gerwig has directed. Her most notable films include Lady Bird and Little Women, both of which were nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Gerwig has said her focus in this film is “to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dream Houses” and to not “forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl.” Gerwig claims her ambition to make the fantasy Barbie world come to life has actually led to an international shortage of pink paint. Sets, costumes, and props were all created with the same specific shade of pink to transport the audience into Barbie’s world, and as a result, “the world ran out of pink.”

Another highly anticipated aspect of the film is its soundtrack. Although it has been confirmed that Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” will not be featured in the film, the lineup for the soundtrack is still impressive. Dua Lipa, who stars in the film, has already released her newest song “Dance The Night”, which will be featured on the soundtrack. The tracklist also names popular artists like Lizzo, Ice Spice, and Nicki Minaj. Gosling is also featured as an artist on the tracklist.

We can’t wait to finally dive into the pink fantasy world of Barbie and Ken on July 21, 2023!
