Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale trailer reveals the end of the beloved franchise as Michelle Dockery and cast return for the final chapter.
The Crawleys are preparing for their final curtain call. Focus Features has officially released the first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the third and final film in the beloved Downton Abbey franchise.
Bringing a 15-year journey to its emotional conclusion, the story picks up in 1930, with Lady Mary (played by Michelle Dockery) now immersed in London high society, while Lord and Lady Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) remain at the family estate in Yorkshire, guiding Downton through one last chapter.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale marks the end of a franchise that began in 2010 with the hit ITV series, which ran for six critically acclaimed seasons before making a successful leap to the big screen. The original Downton Abbey film premiered in 2019 and was followed by Downton Abbey: A New Era in 2022. Together, the first two films grossed impressive numbers at the box office, with the debut film alone earning $194 million worldwide.
Simon Curtis, who directed A New Era, returns to helm the grand farewell, while series creator Julian Fellowes once again pens the screenplay, maintaining continuity in the franchise’s signature tone and storytelling.
Fans will be thrilled to see many familiar faces returning to the screen, including Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Phyllis Logan, Penelope Wilton, Paul Giamatti, and Dominic West. Joining the cast for the final film are newcomers Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan, adding fresh intrigue to the ensemble’s swan song.
The first footage for The Grand Finale made its debut back in April during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation, giving theater owners and insiders an early glimpse at the historical drama’s last act.
Now, with the trailer released to the public, fans can begin counting down to the highly anticipated conclusion. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale officially hits theaters September 12.
