Celebrate the Return of The Met Gala With Our Favorite Moments!

The Met Gala will make its return this September! To celebrate, we have a recap of the best Met Gala moments from previous years.

Fashion’s biggest night, known as the Met Gala, is set to return this September after its 2020 cancellation due to the pandemic. The 2021 September Gala will be followed by another gala eight months later, with its usual time slot in May. Both events will follow a two-part journey into American fashion. Part one will focus on modern American fashion, called “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” while part two will focus on American fashion’s history. To celebrate its return, here are our most memorable Met Gala moments.

Lady Gaga’s Epic Entrance (2019)

Jaws dropped as Gaga made her entrance as Met Gala host in 2019. In a dramatic appearance for the Met Gala’s Camp: Notes on Fashion, she arrived in a large bright pink cape gown with outrageous eye makeup and a big hair bow. Little by little, Gaga removed her gown to show a corseted black dress, then stripped to a black bra with pantyhose. Her last look ended with her wearing a hot pink gown. Gaga is known for her larger than performances, and it was no different for the Met Gala.

The Unauthorized Bathroom Selfie (2017)

At the Met Gala, there is a strict “No selfie rule.” That didn’t prevent Kylie Jenner from posing for an Instagram photo. The selfie included celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Lily Aldridge Brie Larson, A$AP Rocky, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Paris Jackson, Kendall Jenner, Frank Ocean, and Ashton Sanders. Who knew breaking the rules could be so fashionable?

Princess Diana Steps Foot On the Carpet (1996)

The beloved Princess Diana made her first and only appearance at the Met Gala in 1996. The fashion queen wore a navy blue, floor-length dress by Dior along with a pearl choker. With her enchanting presence and excellent taste in style, Princess Diana was the true star of the night.

2 Chainz Proposal to Kesha Ward (2018)

In 2018, 2 Chainz got down on one knee on the Metropolitan steps to propose to Kesha Ward. At the time, though, the couple was already married with three children. The proposal was still a beautiful and romantic gesture. We love seeing true love on that red carpet!

Kim Kardashian Making Her Met Gala Debut Pregnant (2013)

Kim Kardashian finally made her debut at the Met Gala in 2013 with Kanye West. Being pregnant with her first child North West, Kardashian arrived in a floral Givenchy dress. Rocking her gorgeous attire, Kardashian proved she looks flawless in anything at any time.

Rihanna Enters As The Met Gala’s Pope (2018)

Rihanna took us to church with her elegant take on Pope fashion. As the co-host for 2018’s theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, she wore a robe adorned with jewels and pearls. Rihanna always brings her magic when it comes to the Met Gala, but she blew us away with this look.

Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney Rock DIY Tshirts (1999)

Who said t-shirts couldn’t be couture? In 1999, best friends Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney showed up at the rock-themed Met Gala in one shoulder t-shirts with the words “Rock Royalty.” Those DIY shirts started a t-shirt revolution in the 2000s. Thank you, Tyler and McCartney, for showing the world rock ‘n’ roll t-shirts can be glamorous.

Jared Leto Posing With His Own Head (2019)

Talk about double the trouble! For the Met Gala’s 2019 Camp theme, Jared Leto dressed in Gucci as he carried a replica of his own head. It was a nod to Gucci’s Fall-Winter 2018 show, where models carried duplicates of their heads as accessories down the runway. It was a sight to see and a perfect choice for camp.

The Met Gala has had its memorable moments, but we can’t wait for it to return! Until then, we’ll be scrolling through our Instagram, wishing we were there to experience it ourselves.
