Best Moments From The SAG Awards!

The 2022 SAG Awards were held last night and we were able to see some historical moments happen during the ceremony. Here are some of the best moments that happened during the award show.

CODA won big at the SAG Awards and made history as well. Actor Troy Kotsur became the first deaf person to win an individual SAG Award after winning best supporting actor. The Apple TV film was also honored for best ensemble as actress Marlee Matlin on behalf of her co-stars said, “This validates the fact that us deaf actors can work like everyone else,” as she taught the crowd the ASL for “I love you.”

The CODA cast was not the only one showing love to the audience. West Side Story actress Ariana DeBose snagged the award for best supporting actress marking her as the first Latina actress and first openly queer actor to win a SAG award. As she accepted her first award, she fangirled over Lady Gaga giving her a shout-out, “Hi Lady Gaga, you’re amazing!” DeBose’s award is monumental, creating a new pathway for future actors as she mentioned in her speech, “when you recognize one of us, you recognize all of us in a way.” In an backstage interview, Debose added, “It’s indicative that doors are opening,” and that she will not be the last.

Among the race for best actor, Hollywood film star Will Smith took home the award for his performance in King Richard playing the role of tennis champion, Venus Williams’ father. As he accepted his award he called the special night, “one of the greatest moments of my career right now, being called for ‘King Richard’ sitting next to Venus Williams.”

The Korean hit show Squid Game had a big night as stars Lee Jung-jae and actress Jung Ho-yeon both took home awards for actor and actress in a drama series. Netflix’s blockbuster series made its mark in the SAG Awards record book for the first non-English TV show to win acting prizes. Like Kim Joo-ryeong, we couldn’t help but tear up with Ho-yeon while she stood up on stage and thanked her Squid Game family and all the actors for encouraging her to dream bigger and opening the door for her.

The community of actors also did not forget to use their spotlights to address and spread awareness to the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Winning a SAG Award for female actor in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jessica Chastain wished for “our international family…who are fighting for their safety and freedom.” The Morning Show actress Greta Lee walked on the red carpet with a blue and yellow Marc Jacobs dress appearing to pay tribute to Ukraine’s flag.
