Movie Recommendations Based On Your Favorite Taylor Swift Album!

Whether you enjoy Folklore’s melancholy or Reputation’s bad girl energy, we have the movie recs for you!

From her clever lyricism to her insane bridges, Taylor Swift is as much a storyteller as she is a pop musician, so it only makes sense that she would take inspiration from a visual medium like film. Many of her songs have been directly inspired by movies, while others just give off cinematic vibes. No matter what era is your favorite, we have movie recommendations for all the Swifties out there.

If You Love Folklore: Watch Marriage Story

This Academy Award-winning drama directly inspired the lyrics to “my tears ricochet.” Taylor told Entertainment Weekly that she “wrote some of the first lyrics to that song after watching Marriage Story and hearing about when marriages go wrong and end in such a catastrophic way.” This is a heartbreaking yet gripping drama about a couple, played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, going through the difficult process of divorce. Just like Folklore, the film tackles the complexities of relationships in a touching yet poignant way. This is a Netflix original film, and you can stream it there right now!

If You Love Evermore: Watch The Banshees of Inisherin

Recently Taylor Swift sat down with Martin McDonagh, the writer/director of this Oscar frontrunner, and she could not stop talking about how much she loved this movie.

Banshees follows Colin Farrell as a man whose lifelong best friend one day decides to stop talking to him. It is darkly funny and surprisingly melancholy. Much like Evermore, it deals with the hardships that come with old relationships and how they relate to where we come from. Both Banshees and Evermore perfectly encapsulate the sweater weather feeling. This incredible movie is now streaming on HBOmax.

Alt Recommendation:

Sense and Sensibility

Taylor directly referenced this Ang Lee film as holding “very specific film memories” for the album.

If You Love Red: Watch The Souvenir

In her interview with Martin McDonagh, Taylor sighted both parts one and two of this indie drama as a major inspiration for her short film All Too Well. It’s not hard to see why, as both deal with a young woman entering her first real relationship and the art that relationship inspires. Joanna Hogg is a relatively new filmmaker, but she did a masterful job with both parts of this semi-autobiographical film. Check both of these out if you haven’t already.

Alt Recommendations:

The Way We Were

Love Story

Both of these films also served as inspiration for All Too Well, according to Taylor.

If You Love Reputation: Watch The Favourite

Taylor has been an open fan of this period comedy for a long time now, and part of that might have to do with the fact that it co-stars her long-time boyfriend, Joe Alwyn.

The Favourite is a hilarious movie about woman’s roles in society and what we expect from them. It also has the cheeky, mischievous energy that made Reputation such a unique album. This movie has career-best performances from Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Joe Alwyn.

If You Love 1989: Watch Sixteen Candles

80s John Hughes movies were an inspiration to Taylor growing up, and she claims this one had a huge impact on her classic pop album. While parts of the movie haven’t aged the best, this is still a classic teen rom-com and an incredible showcase for Molly Ringwald.

Hopefully, these movie recommendations will fill the time as we await the next album drop!
