5 Reasons Why ‘Maid’ is the Best Show on Netflix Right Now

‘Maid’ premiered on Netflix this October, completely taking the world by storm.  We can’t get enough of this series,  which is why we are listing 5 reasons why ‘Maid’ is the best show currently on Netflix!

**SPOILERS AHEAD FOR NETFLIX’S MAID***

Maid touches on a variety of valuable topics, such as…

Life as a single mother

In Maid, we see the main character, Alex, experience life as a single mother at just 23 years old. From the beginning, this allows the audience to see the vulnerability of her character, making her very relatable.

But, this is not where Alex’s depth ends.

Abusive relationships

Alex became a single mother after leaving her abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Sean. It turns out to not be that simple, though, as Sean continually makes reappearances in their lives. Although he is a good dad, he has a substantial drinking problem, leading the two into a heated custody battle.

In the end, Alex gains full custody of their daughter, Maddy. This aspect of the show is admittedly heavy, but the authenticity truly touches your soul. I was rooting for Alex and Maddy’s happiness the entire way through.

Poverty

Throughout the series, Maid provides an in-depth depiction of what life is like for those below the poverty line. Despite the adversity she faces, Alex is able to use this as a chip on her shoulder. It motivates her to provide the best life possible for her daughter, and her work ethic is truly admirable.

Additionally, Alex rarely relies on others. She is headstrong, and she creates the life she wants for herself, by herself.

Family troubles

Like her ex, Sean, Alex’s father, Hank, is also a recovering alcoholic. Although he tries to reconnect with Alex after she parts ways with Sean, he is still stuck in his own ways. He cannot even bring himself to admit to Alex that he used to abuse her mother, Paula, although she remembers.

He also remarries and starts a whole new family, allowing Alex to feel left in the dust. This is very relatable as so many people can sympathize with what she is feeling in this situation. I think it was very important that Alex held her father accountable in the series, and I’m so glad that she did.

The reality of being a domestic worker

Maid does a great job of detailing Alex’s life as a domestic worker, while also giving us glimpses into the lives of her coworkers as well. These women are earning a severely low wage, all while we see them working their asses off.

This show reinforces the notion that domestic workers should be not only compensated more, but protected, appreciated, and valued more. This is something that not everyone is aware of, and I think this show did an amazing job at bringing these important issues to light.

While Maid was originally created as a limited series, we can’t help but hope for a Season 2. Netflix, if you’re reading this, please think about it!
