5 Mind Blowing Movies That Will Make You Question Reality

There are movies that leave their endings open to interpretation, those that ask deep, philosophical questions, and others that completely throw viewers in a loop! If you’re looking for the next movie to leave you as frazzled as its lead character, we’ve got you covered with our list of 5 mind blowing movies that will make you question reality, along with the lead character!

Inception

Starting with a film that’s notoriously perplexing to a majority of audience goers, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi film Inception is chalk full of convoluted plot points, involving multiple timelines and realities within realities, or rather, dreams within dreams!

Centered around a thief named Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who steals company files through the use of dream technology, he’s tasked with placing an idea inside of the mind of a C.E.O. If you’re already lost and have no idea what to make of this movie’s plot, just know that you’re not alone!

Inception is a surreal experience through the lens of several characters, who undergo multilayered experiences through the use of artificial dreams!

Inception is available to stream on both Apple TV and Max.

Blade Runner

We arrive in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019 for our next reality check in Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci fi cult classic Blade Runner! Set in the once distant future, the projected technological advancements of flying cars and bioengineered replicants (synthetic humans) are still as mind boggling as they were, over 40 years ago!

Blade Runner, Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is tasked with locating and terminating four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to locate their creator. With these manufactured, human-like beings masquerading as everyday people, Rick must distinguish between regular human beings and the rogue replicants that he’s tasked with eliminating!

By the end of the film, fans have been left wondering if Deckard, himself, could in fact be a replicant! This lingering question has sparked decades of debate between fans, who have only increased their suspicions with the director’s cut, portraying a unicorn dream sequence that potentially alludes towards Deckard’s inability to escape the system that he’s trapped inside!

It’s safe to say that fans of the sci fi classic are just as conflicted with the reality behind Deckard’s biological or synthetic origin, as he is!

Blade Runner is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video.

Stalker

Our next entry to the list of tantalizing think pieces is an obscure, yet influential film to the sci fi genre and to cinema as a whole! Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 sci-fi drama film Stalker, follows an illegal guide or stalker, leading his two clients through a desolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland known as the Zone, in search of a room that grants wishes!

Our three wanderers are constantly reminded of the new world in which they inhabit, by traveling through ravaged towns and barren, muddy landscapes without signs of humanity, in search of the mystical room.

Fans are as conflicted, as they are intrigued by the darkly grotesque world of Stalker and the absurdity of their quest to locate what seems to be the answers to humanity’s plight!

Stalker is available to stream on Max.

The Truman Show

All the world’s a stage in Peter Weir’s 1998 film, The Truman Show, about an insurance salesman discovering that his entire life is a reality TV show! Starring Jim Carrey as the man within his own reality, his every move since birth has been monitored by thousands of cleverly hidden cameras, orchestrated by a manipulative television producer, Christof, played by Ed Harris.

At the helm of an extreme, 24/7 reality show that uses Truman’s very own neighborhood as an elaborate set, Chritstof has the ultimate power to dictate Truman’s reality and the concept of life itself!

The Truman Show is available to stream on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+.

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind

Charlie Kaufman’s romance drama Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind stars Jim Carrey as Joel and Kate Winslet as Clementine in a fated love story about a couple who are participating in a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories.

Much like The Truman Show, this film calls everything you see on screen into question, as Joel begins his memory wipe of the wonderful moments with Clementine, by entering into a black void! Realizing that he’s made a serious mistake, Joel attempts to undo the process of his fading memory of Clementine, by dragging her into his childhood memories and hiding underneath his most humiliating moments.

This surreal, yet somber story places fans in the headspace of the ill-fated Joel, who realizes that he made the mistake of erasing the memories, as well as potentially losing the love of his life. Not only does this question Joel and Clementine’s reality and status of their relationship, but asks audiences how far they’d go to either lose or recover the memories of their partners.

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video.
