The Train Dreams trailer debuts with Joel Edgerton delivering what critics call a career-best performance in Clint Bentley’s adaptation of Denis Johnson’s novella.
Netflix has unveiled the main trailer and key art for Train Dreams, a moving adaptation of Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella that has already become one of the year’s most celebrated films. The movie will open in select theaters on November 7 before its global streaming debut on Netflix November 21.
Directed by Clint Bentley and co-written with Greg Kwedar, Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker whose life unfolds with unexpected depth and beauty against the backdrop of a rapidly changing America in the early 20th century. Edgerton, who also serves as an executive producer, has been singled out for what Vanity Fair has praised as “a career-best performance.”
He’s joined by an impressive ensemble that includes Academy Award nominees Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy, alongside Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, and Paul Schneider. The film is narrated by Will Patton.
Train Dreams first premiered at Sundance, went on to screen internationally at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will be featured at the BFI London Film Festival. Critics have embraced the adaptation with near-universal acclaim — the film is currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 98%. Publications including The New Yorker, Vulture, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Daily Beast have all praised Bentley’s direction and the film’s poignant storytelling.
Produced by Marissa McMahon, Teddy Schwarzman, William Janowitz, Ashley Schlaifer, and Michael Heimler, with Edgerton, Scott Hinckley, Greg Kwedar, and John Friedberg serving as executive producers, Train Dreams looks poised to become a major awards contender and a standout in this year’s film slate.
Audiences can now watch the debut trailer, which captures the lyrical tone of Johnson’s novella while spotlighting Edgerton’s emotional performance at the heart of the story.
Train Dreams premieres in theaters November 7 before streaming worldwide on Netflix November 21.
