Hear ye, hear ye, the nominations of the 2020 Emmy Awards have been released! As an avid TV show viewer myself, this is by far my favorite award show. Today, the nominations have dropped and here are my predictions on who will win the coveted award. My picks will be bolded on each category list. Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Anthony Anderson, Black-ish Don Cheadle, Black Monday Ted Danson, The Good Place Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method Eugene Levy, Schitt’s Creek Ramy Youssef, Ramy While these are all talented male actors and some of my favorite shows have made it to the list, I think Ted Danson will take home the prize in this category. Based on past awards, this is the third time in a row Anthony Anderson and Ted Danson have been nominated. It’s also the second time in a row Michael Douglas and Eugene Levy have been nominated. This will also be the last time Ted Danson will be nominated in this category for the Good Place as the show just ended this year. Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Christina Applegate, Dead to Me Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Linda Cardellini, Dead to Me Catherine O’Hara, Schitt’s Creek Issa Rae, Insecure Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish Again, such great talent in this category and more diverse than the Lead Actor Category. Rachel Bronsnahan is nominated for the third time this year and if you don’t remember, she won the award back in 2018 for season 1 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Catherine O’Hara is nominated again for the second time in a row, and both Tracee Ellis Ross and Issa Rae have both been nominated again. I think Issa Rae is going to take home the award this year as her show has gained popularity over this past year and is being renewed for season 5. Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Andre Braugher Brooklyn Nine-Nine Kenan Thompson Saturday Night Live William Jackson Harper The Good Place Sterling K. Brown The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Mahershala Ali Ramy Daniel Levy Schitt’s Creek Alan Arkin The Kominsky Method Tony Shalhoub The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel While I love a lot of the people who are nominated in this category, I really believe Daniel Levy is going to take home the title. He not only is a key character, but based off of the last season, I really believe he should be in the Lead Actor category. He works so well with the cast and is an executive producer of the show. He really knows how the character should be portrayed. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Betty Gilpin Glow Cecily Strong Saturday Night Live Annie Murphy Schitt’s Creek Alex Borstein The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Yvonne Orji Insecure Kate McKinnon Saturday Night Live D’Arcy Carden The Good Place Marin Hinkle The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel I love The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but that’s not the whole reason why I picked Alex Borestein as the potential winner for outstanding supporting actress. She’s also won the award for the same character for two consecutive years. Outstanding Variety Talk Series The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Full Frontal With Samantha Bee Jimmy Kimmel Live! Last Week Tonight With John Oliver The Last Show with Stephen Colbert To be honest, I’m not the biggest talk show fan (I know, sue me!), so this category is one of the harder ones to pick. Now Last Week with John Oliver has now won four years in a row, so if I was taking a safe bet, I would probably go with that. However, the Television Academy might want to spice things up. If that’s the case, I think I would go with Jimmy Kimmel Live! because not only has it been consistently picked as a nominee for the past five years, but the show has already won three Emmys. Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series Jason Bateman — Ozark (Netflix) Sterling K. Brown — This Is Us (NBC) Steve Carell — The Morning Show (Apple) Brian Cox — Succession (HBO) Billy Porter — Pose (FX) Jeremy Strong — Succession (HBO) Wow, this category has a lot of strong suitors. Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown and the prior winner, Billy Porter who have all made their way back on this year’s ballot. Newcomers Steve Carell, Brian Cox and Jeremy Song have solidified their spots on this year’s nominations list as well. I thought Billy Porter had a better shot than last year due to the national recognition of Pose, which he has received over the last couple of months, prior to the big win. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Steve Carell is going to win. Although The Morning Show is one of my favorite shows this year, Carell’s character really made a name for himself this season (last year Carell didn’t even make the ballot) and he became if not ,one of the most prominent figures of the show. Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series Jennifer Aniston — The Morning Show (Apple) Olivia Colman — The Crown (Netflix) Jodie Comer — Killing Eve (BBC) Laura Linney — Ozark (Netflix) Sandra Oh — Killing Eve (BBC) Zendaya — Euphoria (HBO) This category has a good mix of returning nominees and new ones. Sandra Oh, Laura Linney and reigning champion Jodie Comer are at it again with the back-to-back nominations. While I want to say Jennifer Aniston will take home the prize, I think the smarter choice would be Sandra Oh. She has not only been nominated twice but she is a part of a thriving show that has already won the Emmy. Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Giancarlo Esposito Better Call Saul Nicholas Braun Succession Bradley Whitford The Handmaid’s Tale Mark Duplass The Morning Show Matthew Macfadyen Succession Kieran Culkin Succession Billy Crudup The Morning Show Jeffrey Wright Westworld I really believe Mark Duplass is going to win for Outstanding Supporting Actor because his role really expanded this past season of The Morning Show. Similar to Steve Carell, he really became such a prominent character on the show and really became a key component. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Meryl Streep Big Little Lies Fiona Shaw Killing Eve Sarah Snook Succession Samira Wiley The Handmaid’s Tale Laura Dern Big Little Lies Julia Garner Ozark Helena Bonham Carter The Crown Thandie Newton Westworld Ok I feel like this is kinda a no-brainer just because it’s MERYL. It’s interesting because for this role I felt like it was very different from what she’s used to playing and did such a fabulous job doing it. I am surprised however, that none of the main cast members were not nominated. Outstanding Competition Series The Masked Singer (Fox) Nailed It (Netflix) RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1) Top Chef (Bravo) The Voice (NBC) Competition shows haven’t been my forte for a while but I am pretty well-versed. RulPaul’s Drag Race is the returning winner along with Top Chef, The Voice and Nailed It. I do think RuPaul’s Drag Race will take it home again, not only because of what it stands for, but the production quality is amazing. Plus, their fanbase is one that you shouldn’t mess with. Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie Jeremy Irons — Watchmen (HBO) Hugh Jackman — Bad Education (HBO) Paul Mescal — Normal People (Hulu) Jeremy Pope — Hollywood (Netflix) Mark Ruffalo — I Know This Much Is True (HBO) Now this category along with the next two are probably the hardest to pick, just because it is a completely different list every year. However, I’m going to go out on another limb and say Jeremy Pope from Hollywood is going to take this one home. The Show has gotten a lot of great feedback as well as the acting in general. Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or a Television Movie Cate Blanchett — Mrs. America (FX) Shira Haas — Unorthodox (Netflix) Regina King — Watchmen (HBO) Octavia Spencer — Self Made Kerry Washington — Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu) Like I said before, this category is pretty tricky to make a well educated guess, but I do think Cate Blanchett will win the category. All the nominees are great and very diverse but Cate Blanchett in Mrs. America really did take her character to the next level. I really felt like I was back in the 70s! Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie Dylan McDermott Hollywood Tituss Burgess Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend Jovan Adepo Watchman Jim Parsons Hollywood Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Watchman Louis Gossett Jr. Watchman While I personally didn’t watch Hollywood (like I said before) it was well received. McDermott played Ernie West who is based off of Scotty Bowers who is a key character on the show. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Television Movie Holland Taylor Hollywood Margo Martindale Mrs. America Toni Collette Unbelievable Uzo Aduba Mrs. America Tracey Ullman Mrs. America Jean Smart Watchman I’m choosing Uzo Aduba because of the way she played her character. Shirley Chisholm, was the first black candidate for a major party’s nomination for the President of the United States and one of the first two women to run for the Democratic Party. She really did Shirley justice and should be rewarded for not only her acting but educating those who didn’t know this part of history. Outstanding Limited Series Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu) Mrs. America (FX) Unbelievable (Netflix) Unorthodox (Netflix) Watchmen (HBO) For me, I really am torn between two shows which is Mrs. America and Unorthodox. Both shows are based on real life events and really bring these characters to the 21st century. I do think however, Mrs. America might win because it is less controversial than Unorthodox. There was no disclaimer about the religious sector of Judaism and viewers were confused about that. Outstanding Comedy Series Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) Dead to Me (Netflix) The Good Place (NBC) Insecure (HBO) The Kominsky Method (Netflix) The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon) Schitt’s Creek (Pop) What We Do in the Shadows (FX) This category has to be one of the most fabulous ones out of this whole list. We have a few returning shows: The Good Place, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Schitt’s Creek. I do think Curb Your Enthusiasm will take the award home just because although it is not the last season anymore, it was filmed with the intention that it was. It is also one of the “newcomers” on the list and was so beloved HBO requested another season of Curb Your Enthusiasm which is about being in quarantine. Outstanding Drama Series Better Call Saul (AMC) The Crown (Netflix) The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) Killing Eve (BBC) The Mandalorian (Disney+) Ozark (Netflix) Stranger Things (Netflix) Succession (HBO) Another fabulous category however I am surprised to see is The Mandalorian featured on this list as it’s the first nomination for a Disney+ show. Killing Eve, Better Call Saul, Ozark and Succession have all made their way back on the ballot. I do think though, The Mandalorian might take home the prize just because it’s new, fresh and kind of the outlier since all of these shows have been nominated multiple times.
