The Internet Loves Buggy the Clown!

The live-action One Piece is here and people are having… unexpected reactions to the series’ first antagonist.

I’ve never been one to yuck someone’s yum, especially when it comes to the internet. If you’ve been around the block, you know that people can have some strange and passionate interests, with today’s subject being no exception. However, I do have to question: What is it with clowns specifically?

If you recall, back in the era of the new IT film releases, there was a certain subset of people that also felt strongly about Pennywise the Dancing Clown as well. However, this seemed to stem more from a love for the actor behind the makeup, Bill Skarsgård, and not for the clown itself (certainly not without exception).

Though Jeff Ward (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), the actor behind Buggy, is undeniably handsome; very little of the Buggy seems to be focused on him out of the makeup. The hype for Buggy appears to be its own beast entirely.

For example, at nearly 1 million likes:

Needless to say, people feel strongly about him; even though not everyone agrees.

Whatever it is about Buggy, it doesn’t seem to be dying down any time and sometimes the best explanation you can muster for internet love is— different strokes for different folks. Need I remind you all about the Great Venom Debate of 2018? Or The Shape of Water? The internet’s attraction to what the mainstream considers strange is nothing new and frankly, I think we should embrace it.

Maybe I’m biased due to my time spent on Tumblr in the mid-2010s, but there are many, many people with weird passions in this world and they are the ones that keep the wheels of the internet turning. From startlingly screen-accurate cosplays in a matter of days:

To amazing art

@kirinjeh buggy is suddenly my favorite character from one piece #buggy #buggyonepiece #onepiece #onepieceliveaction #art #fanart #fypシ ♬ FANTASIZE – mari

Love makes people do strange things, but sometimes incredibly creative things as well.

So yes, I will be the first to defend the clown-lovers of the internet because the day the internet stops being really into fish monsters, clowns, and random cartoon men is the day it gets a whole lot less entertaining.
