Many famous women have had iconic looks for when their relationships end; let’s take a look at some of these fabulous breakup outfits!

Princess Diana

This infamous look made the term “revenge dress!” This off-the-shoulder dress was designed by Christian Stambolin in 1994, and Princess Diana wore it after her divorce from Prince Charles. Christian stated that Princess Diana did not want to wear white and instead chose this color because of her anger. It was shown at an event that occurred the same night Charles admitted to having an affair with his current wife, Camilla. This did not come as much of a surprise to Diana as she said, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” 

Miley Cyrus

Miley wore this black long-sleeve, body-hugging, deep plunge dress to a memorial service for Oribe Canales in 2019. She paired it with Dior solight sunglasses, a Gucci black satin satchel bag, Tom Ford heels, and a Mary McFadden tassel rope belt. This look was post-divorce announcement from Liam Hemsworth. To put this moment over the top, she showed up with her (then) new girlfriend, Kaitlynn Carter. 

 Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez attended a meeting in this Givenchy black suit in 2019. This was after she and her then-boyfriend, Justin Beiber, called it quits for the final time after being on and off for eight years. Selena wore this right after the release of her song “Lose You to Love Me,” which was about Justin. It set up her time frame to release “Look at Her Now” the following day to show that she is doing just fine without him. This is such a power move considering everything that was going on. 

Mariah Carey

Mariah wore this two-piece outfit was worn by the singer to the MTV Video Music Awards in 1997 after separating from her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola. The black bandeau top and thigh-high slit skirt was before its time and was quite risky in that time period. She said their marriage was “intense and all-encompassing,” which just makes the outfit even more iconic by showing she doesn’t care and she can do whatever she wants.

Although this is not a dress, Bella showed off her figure with this look, and it was iconic nonetheless. This see-through catsuit was made by Alexander Wang, and it was so tight that she needed to be sewn into it. Bella wore it to the Met Gala in 2017 that her ex-boyfriend, Abel (aka The Weekend), and his then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, attended together. 

Olivia Wilde

This see-through Christian Dior gown that Olivia wore to the People’s Choice Awards in 2022 occurred shortly after her breakup with Harry Styles. If something were to scream, “I’m single again,” this would be it. Of course, it is one thing to make an appearance, but her film Don’t Worry Darling also won the award for Drama Movie of the Year. Her success was a powerful way to bounce back. 

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa’s stylist, Jason Bolden, put together this bold white gown with feathers and rhinestones and included a train. She wore it in January 2020 when attending the Bad Boys For Life premiere alone after her split from Austin Butler, whom she’d been with for nine years. While this dress is not black like the others, it can provide a sense of purity, which means a new beginning. She is clearly ready for a new chapter in her life. 

Madelyn Cline 

Madelyn flaunted this black Mônot design with dramatic midriff cut-outs, long gloves, and black heels. This more modern look of the revenge dress idea was worn on her first red carpet appearance after her breakup with Outer Banks co-star Chase Stokes.
