Steven Universe: Lars Of The Stars Series In The Works

Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar revealed a new Prime Video series Lars of the Stars, plus updates on Adventure Time, Gumball and more!

Steven Universe is officially getting a brand-new chapter. During Warner Bros. Animation’s showcase at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar unveiled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, a new animated series currently in development for Prime Video.

Announced alongside a suite of animated revivals and spin-offs from Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, Lars of the Stars will follow fan-favorite character Lars Barriga, now described as an “eternal teenager and space outlaw.” The upcoming series, co-created by Sugar and her partner Ian Jones-Quartey (OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes), will chronicle Lars’ space-faring adventures with his crew as they smuggle contraband, dodge authorities, and uncover dark secrets tied to the fallen Gem Empire.

Sugar made the emotional announcement after performing a new original song, “Part of the Madness,” for the second season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. She revealed that Lars of the Stars is not just a continuation of Steven Universe, but a personal return to the world and characters she missed deeply. The original series, which aired from 2013 to 2020, won a Peabody Award and was widely praised for its inclusive storytelling and emotional resonance.

Lars of the Stars isn’t the only animated fan-favorite getting fresh life. Warner Bros. Animation also confirmed that Teen Titans Go!—the longest running DC animated series—has been renewed for a milestone tenth season on Cartoon Network. Executive producers Luke Cormican, Peggy Regan, and Sam Register will all return.

Also making waves at the festival was a first look at the upcoming season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, presented by showrunner Adam Muto. He shared that the new season will focus more on Fionna’s world rather than Ooo and teased a larger role for Huntress Wizard. Sugar’s song for the season was originally penned for Simon Petrikov to sing, reflecting the bittersweet tone of his post-Ice King identity.

Elsewhere, Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel teased a mysterious new series set in the same universe. While the title remains under wraps, he delighted audiences with a slideshow of animated food products from the show and confirmed he’s also developing a YA series based on Jillian Tamaki’s Super Mutant Magic Academy, a blend of X-Men and Harry Potter sensibilities.

Animation legend Craig McCracken introduced his preschool-targeted reboot of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, emphasizing humor over life lessons with the rule “Laughs over Lectures.” A sneak peek clip confirmed that while the tone is aimed younger, the comedic edge remains sharp—Bloo even warns invisible friends to never trust adults, especially if they’re trying to make you eat broccoli.

Closing out the showcase, The Amazing World of Gumball returned under its newly updated title, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball. Executive producer Ben Bocquelet revealed that the series will feel very much like a continuation of the original, complete with returning crew and a sneak peek clip that looked like it could’ve aired during the show’s earlier run.

With Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars leading the charge, fans of these groundbreaking series have plenty to look forward to as these beloved universes expand in bold new directions.
