Gomez revealed in 2017 that she received a kidney transplant from her friend and “Grown-Ish” actress Francia Raisa. The transplant was needed as a result of her battle with lupus.
In a caption accompanying the picture posted to Instagram, Gomez, rocking a baby blue swimsuit, said:
“When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through… and I’m proud of that.”
Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.
Since announcing her battle with lupus and the kidney transplant, Gomez has admitted to battling with depression but she continues to push through and has released new music, film and TV projects, launched her makeup line Rare Beauty and added Executive Producer to her repertoire with this month’s release of The Broken Hearts Gallery.
