The First Episode of The New Pope picks up where the 2016 HBO hit The Young Pope ended with the Pope’s serious medical condition. The show picks up with Pope Pius in a coma after his heart attack. He undergoes a heart transplant which did not take. Now Vioello and the gang of Cardinals are forced to vote for a new Pope.

Sofia is confronted by Leopard Essence about her husband, she follows him to find out he, Spalletta and Guicciardini are having relations with an underage girl. Ester is done with Fabiano but now wants paid directly $15,000 per visit with Attanasio. Spalletta is confronted by the Pope but makes an excuse for his actions and instead, convinced the Pope to get Voiello out. Voiello does resign but provides gifts on his way out. The Pope finally has his live interview and goes through withdrawal mid-interview and gets up and walks out during tough questions about the church. Lenny is still breathing and sighing and knocks out the electricity.
