Released today, May 6, Stuck Up and Stupid is a modern reimagining of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, written for a new generation of readers. The story centers on Lily, a teenage girl spending her summer at the dreamy Pippi Beach in Australia. Her quiet coastal life gets turned upside down when Hollywood celebrities arrive—and among them is Dorian Khan, a moody, larger-than-life movie star who immediately gets under her skin.
“While most of the locals, including Lily’s glamor-obsessed mum, are thrilled to be so close to the A-listers, Lily can’t help but see them as superficial and arrogant, especially Dorian, the most famous of them all,” the official synopsis reveals. But as sparks fly and misunderstandings unfold, Lily begins to question her first impressions.
The writing duo behind the book, Angourie Rice and Kate Rice, opened up to Reese Witherspoon‘s book club about their inspiration. “Elizabeth Bennett became Lily, an eighteen-year-old high school graduate who is trying to enjoy her last summer before she decides what to do with her life,” they explained. “The small English village in Hertfordshire became Pippi Beach, a sunny, sandy, idyllic place where you can leave your worries (and your shoes) behind. And Mr Darcy became Dorian Khan, a Hollywood movie star who arrives at Pippi looking for a reclusive summer vacation, only to find himself entangled in local parties and beach games, and he can’t get local girl Lily out of his head.”
Calling Pride and Prejudice the “blueprint for the modern romantic comedy,” the authors shared that their goal was to capture everything that has made the original story so enduring—from awkward run-ins with crushes to cringe-worthy family moments, gossipy neighbors, and the bravery it takes to admit you were wrong.
Whether you’re a fan of classic romance with a twist or just looking for a great book to pack for vacation, Stuck Up and Stupid is already available at major retailers and ready to charm readers all summer long.
