Our Lady J: The Birth of Transgender Identities in Pop Culture | LGBTQ&A

Our Lady J talks about being a writer for Transparent, the power and responsibility that storytellers have, and shares the “beautiful and excruciating” moments from growing up in a predominantly Amish community. She talks about playing piano for people like Sia, as well as the discrimination she faced in the music industry after she transitioned. Our Lady J also describes the ongoing process of learning to love herself, saying she’s no longer interested in lying about her age.

Our Lady J is an American classical pianist, television writer, and singer-songwriter. She is best known for writing for the 2014 Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning television series Transparent. OUT Magazine has named Our Lady J one of their “OUT 100,” and The Huffington Post honored her on their list of transgender icons.

Our Lady J is also a much-sought-after pianist in the music industry, with collaborations including Sia Furler, Lady Gaga, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Antony, Scissor Sisters, Justin Tranter, and countless Broadway stars. She has performed in the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Hollywood Palladium, Alice Tulley Hall at Lincoln Center, and the legendary CBGB. As a classical pianist, she has worked with American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Los Angeles Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and the Mark Morris Dance Group.
