Michelle Monaghan Leads New Netflix Hockey Drama

Michelle Monaghan stars in a heartfelt new Netflix hockey series from Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, following a grieving town’s fight to rebuild after tragedy.

Golden Globe nominated actress Michelle Monaghan is stepping into the rink in Netflix’s upcoming eight-episode hockey drama from creator Nick Naveda (Words on Bathroom Walls, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward) and showrunner/executive producer Bridget Bedard (Love Life, Ramy, Transparent).

Set in the small, working-class town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, where hockey is more than just a sport — it’s a way of life — the series centers on Monaghan’s character, Harper Sullivan, an unlikely coach with a heavy past. When a tragic bus crash claims the lives of several players and the team’s legendary coach, “Sully” Sullivan, Harper — his widow — is called upon to pick up the pieces and lead the devastated high school team.

The story follows a group of battered and broken young men as they rebuild from the ashes, rediscover their strength, and turn their shared grief into a source of hope and unity.

Produced by Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps — the company behind Netflix hits like Stranger Things, All the Light We Cannot See, The Perfect Couple, and The Adam Project — the series brings together an impressive creative team. Levy, Dan Levine (Arrival, All the Light We Cannot See, Shadow and Bone), and Robert Atwood (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) serve as executive producers for 21 Laps, with Moera Ainai (The Perfect Couple) as producer. Trey Edward Shults (It Comes at Night, Waves, Krisha) will executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

Creator Nick Naveda shared his personal connection to the story, saying, “I’ve carried South Dorothy and its people in my heart for as long as I can remember. To finally bring that world to life with my Grizzly family at 21 Laps and Netflix is nothing short of a dream come true.”

Levy echoed that sentiment, praising the project’s emotional core. “This show has long been a 21 Laps favorite and one of the best pieces we’ve had the privilege of developing,” he said. “Nick and Bridget have built a world and ensemble of characters rooted in authenticity and huge heart. With its visceral sports backdrop and deep humanity, we cannot wait to bring this show to a global audience.”

While the series doesn’t yet have a release date, fans can expect a moving story of resilience, redemption, and the power of community — all set against the thrilling backdrop of small-town hockey.
