Leanne Morgan’s hit Netflix sitcom may be returning for a second season as fans push for renewal and Kristen Johnston voices her support.
Fans of comedian Leanne Morgan may have even more to laugh about soon. Her Netflix sitcom Leanne has become a runaway hit since its debut, and now, reports are surfacing that the series could be gearing up for a second season.
According to entertainment site Film Fanatics, Leanne has been picked up for Season 2, though Netflix has yet to confirm the news. For fans, who’ve already turned the first 16-episode season into a top ten streaming success, the rumor is fueling plenty of hope.
The buzz grew louder during an August 22 Instagram Live with Leanne and co-star Kristen Johnston, who plays her sister on the comedy. Fans flooded the chat asking whether the sitcom would return. Leanne admitted, “People are saying ‘are we getting a season two, are we getting a season two, we’ve binge-watched it, we’ve watched it three or four times… we don’t know yet. They’re gonna tell us soon but I hope Netflix will let us do it again.”
Johnston was quick to back her up, saying she believes the show has a strong chance. “It definitely should. I think it’s got a lot going for it. I think they’re going to but you know, you never know what goes into those decisions.”
The Instagram chat also gave fans a candid look at the actresses’ off-screen friendship. Leanne shared how self-conscious she felt watching herself on television for the first time, joking about seeing her “butt” and wondering “what happened to my chin.” Johnston reassured her, reminding her that sitcom icons like Lucille Ball made comedy shine through expression and humor rather than appearance.
Kristen related the experience to her time on Mom alongside Allison Janney, noting that she had to embrace her own insecurities after gaining weight from lupus medications. “I just had to like, embrace it and be like ‘this is how you look, like, get over it’ and just worry about being funny. And that’s what I did,” she said.
That authenticity resonates with viewers. Fans on social media praised Leanne for portraying relatable characters, with one comment reading, “We love that Leanne’s character isn’t shaped like Kate Moss. We are moms with normal bodies out here.” Another fan added, “I haven’t laughed like that watching a tv show in a good while. Thanks for making us ‘mature’ ladies seen!!!”
Leanne and Kristen said they’ve been surprised by the diverse range of people who connect with the show. “You know what I’ve been hearing which thrills me? How many men love this show and that thrills me,” Leanne said. Kristen agreed, pointing out that she’s received feedback from people of different ages, races, and backgrounds who are enjoying the comedy.
For Leanne, the experience has already exceeded her expectations. She called the success of the show “sweeter and more wonderful than anything I ever imagined.”
Created with comedy veteran Chuck Lorre — whose credits include The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and Two and a Half Men — Leanne follows a resilient Southern mom starting over with the support of her outspoken family after her husband leaves her.
While fans eagerly await official renewal news, all 16 episodes of Leanne Season 1 are currently streaming on Netflix, ready for binge-watching — again.
