Disney+ Cancels Goosebumps Series After Two Seasons

Disney+ cancels Goosebumps television series after two seasons, but Sony plans to shop the franchise elsewhere for future possibilities.

After just two seasons, Disney+ has pulled the plug on its Goosebumps television series, Variety reports. The reimagined take on R.L. Stine’s beloved horror books debuted in 2023 and was only loosely inspired by the original stories. While the first season followed one set of characters, Season 2 — titled Goosebumps: The Vanishing — introduced an entirely new cast and plot.

According to the report, producer Sony Pictures Television is not ready to close the book on Goosebumps. The studio plans to shop the series to other platforms and explore fresh creative directions for the iconic property. That means while this specific Disney+ version may be over, Goosebumps could resurface in another form.

During its run, the two seasons racked up an impressive 75 million hours viewed in the U.S. and an additional 43 million hours across 16 international markets. The numbers underscore the enduring appeal of the brand, which has been a pop culture staple for decades.

The Goosebumps franchise first made its mark on television from 1995 to 1998, adapting Stine’s spine-chilling stories directly from the page for four seasons. It later jumped to the big screen with the hit 2015 film Goosebumps and its 2018 sequel, Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween.

Unlike the original series, the Disney+ adaptation opted for an original narrative framework, weaving in familiar creatures and moments from the books but focusing on newly created characters and arcs. The latest version was developed by Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller for Disney+ and Hulu.

While fans may be disappointed by the abrupt end, Sony’s interest in keeping the property alive offers hope that more Goosebumps frights could be coming — just not in the same form.
