Colin Farrell leads Ballad of a Small Player directed by Edward Berger, arriving in theaters October 15 before its global Netflix debut October 29.
Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Ballad of a Small Player, the upcoming drama starring Colin Farrell and directed by Academy Award winner Edward Berger (All Quiet On The Western Front, Conclave). The film is set to open in select theaters on October 15 before its worldwide streaming release on Netflix on October 29.
Based on the novel The Ballad of a Small Player by Lawrence Osborne, the film follows Lord Doyle, played by Farrell, a man hiding out in Macau. Consumed by alcohol and long nights on the casino floor, Doyle finds himself drowning in debt and running out of time. His downward spiral takes a turn when he crosses paths with Dao Ming, a mysterious casino employee with secrets of her own, portrayed by Fala Chen.
While Doyle struggles to escape his circumstances, he becomes the target of Cynthia Blithe, a relentless private investigator played by Tilda Swinton, determined to confront him about his past. As Doyle grasps for redemption, the boundaries between reality and illusion begin to collapse around him.
The film also stars Deanie Ip and Alex Jennings, rounding out a celebrated ensemble cast.
Behind the camera, Ballad of a Small Player boasts an accomplished creative team. The screenplay is written by Rowan Joffe, with Mike Goodridge, Edward Berger, and Matthew James Wilkinson producing. James Friend serves as director of photography, Jonathan Houlding as production designer, and Nick Emerson as editor. The film’s aesthetic is further shaped by Heike Merker for makeup and hair, Lisy Christl for costumes, and Academy Award-winning composer Volker Bertelmann, who provides the score.
With its themes of desperation, deception, and fragile salvation, Ballad of a Small Player promises a gripping journey set against the high-stakes world of Macau casinos.
Ballad of a Small Player premieres in theaters October 15 before streaming globally on Netflix October 29.
