Basketball Wives star Brittany Renner reveals she divorced rapper Kevin Gates after just 52 days of marriage, citing personal growth and peace.
Basketball Wives star Brittany Renner has confirmed her whirlwind marriage to rapper Kevin Gates is already over — just 52 days after saying “I do.”
The 33-year-old reality star broke the news during an interview on Los Angeles radio station REAL 92.3 LA, revealing the couple tied the knot on April 6 and filed for divorce on May 28.
Renner explained the context of their brief union through the lens of Islamic tradition, noting, “There is a 90-day waiting period in Islam, where you have 90 days to see if you’re pregnant because then he would be responsible. But also in those 90 days, it’s for recommendation because the law wants you to stay married. And during those 90 days, you are not to entertain anybody romantically.”
Despite the short-lived marriage, Renner isn’t walking away bitter. “So, what I will say is Islam has made my life easier,” she shared. “Honestly, I don’t think anybody gets married to not stay married. So this is a nice 90-day reset, just focusing on myself.”
The couple made several public appearances during their brief romance, including attending a Basketball Wives LA Season 12 premiere party on May 2 and a Los Angeles Lakers game together on April 22. Renner, who joined Basketball Wives in 2023 for Season 11, even gushed about Gates in a May 4 interview with PEOPLE, saying, “All I can say is, is that I’m with the person that I quite literally dreamed of… He’s just the most beautiful person inside and out that I’ve ever met.”
Still, despite the strong emotions, Renner says she has no regrets. “I followed my heart,” she told the radio station. “A lot of people… don’t give it their all. But I feel like when you do, you’re at peace with whatever happens because I gave 100 percent.”
She added, “I don’t feel like it’s a sucky situation because what is meant to be is always going to be.”
For her part, Renner appeared calm and confident just days after the split, attending the June 6 premiere of Tyler Perry’s Divorced Sistas in Los Angeles.
Renner shares a 4-year-old son with NBA star P.J. Washington, and despite another chapter closing, she appears focused on new beginnings — with no shame in her love story.
