7 Female Directed & Produced Films and TV Shows Coming in 2022!

In honor of women’s history month, here are some films and shows to look forward to that were made by women behind the scenes.

Women have long fought the battle for equity in Hollywood–in 2020, a record high number of top 250 grossing films were directed by women. But in 2021, that number regressed, down to just 17%. In 2022, women directors are pushing to break the barrier once again. Here are seven female led projects coming this year.

Fresh – Directed by Mimi Cave

Fresh, starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar Jones of Normal People, recently came to Hulu on March 4th. The film follows a young woman’s harrowing journey in the world of modern dating––which quickly becomes a horror story.

Mothering Sunday – Directed by Eva Husson

The British romantic drama takes place in post World War I England, and follows a secret love affair between a wealthy young man (Josh O’Connor) and a maid turned writer (Odessa Young). Colin Firth also stars as Young’s wealthy employer. The film will be released on March 25th in the US.

Bridgerton Season Two – Produced by Shonda Rhimes

The iconic Regency-era period show that had everyone hooked at the height of quarantine is back for its second season–and with new love interests for oldest Bridgerton brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey). With its classic covers of modern pop songs and corsets galore, Shonda Rhimes crafted a beautifully unique alternate Regency England that allowed for a diverse cast and compelling storyline. You can watch season two on Netflix on March 25th.

The Dropout – Created by Elizabeth Merriweather

The new Hulu miniseries follows the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos. The company initially promised to offer a diagnosis for thousands of ailments with only a tiny sample of blood–only their machines offered thousands of misdiagnoses nationwide, including things as serious as cancer. Holmes is embroiled in an ongoing trial for multiple counts of fraud, for which her max sentencing could be up to 20 years in prison. Amanda Seyfried stars as Holmes in this fascinating story, which began its release on March 3rd.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Directed by Kasi Lemmons

The powerful Whitney Houston’s life is coming to the screen at the end of this year. The biopic is currently slated for release on December 21st, 2022. The film stars Naomi Ackie as the late Houston and Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, and is produced by Clive Davis.

Hocus Pocus 2 – Directed by Anne Fletcher

We’re back in Salem with the return of this classic Halloween film franchise starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, and Doug Jones. This time, the trio of witch sisters work to save the town alongside three unsuspecting high schoolers. Filming began in Massachusetts this past fall, and the film is slated for a Halloween 2022 release on Disney +.

Be sure to keep an eye out for these upcoming new projects and returns of some classics–perspective and representation in Hollywood are incredibly important, and so is supporting female-led projects!
