The docuseries will premiere exclusively on the streaming platform on September 25, 2025, with all three episodes available to viewers in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The documentary examines the astonishing rise and catastrophic downfall of Owen Hanson, a Redondo Beach native who went from a walk-on player on USC’s National Championship-winning football team to becoming a cocaine kingpin for one of the world’s most dangerous cartels.
Hanson’s story begins with humble beginnings and an unexpected opportunity with USC football. But after graduation, while his teammates moved on to lucrative careers in the NFL, he turned toward illegal sports bookmaking and eventually drug trafficking. Drawn by the allure of fast money, Hanson forged ties with a powerful Mexican drug lord, escalating his small-time schemes into high-stakes cartel operations.
The series follows his reckless pursuit of wealth, which unraveled after a botched money laundering scheme lost millions of cartel funds. That failure left him entangled in dangerous debts, absurd criminal mishaps, and a relentless FBI investigation.
Told through firsthand accounts from those involved, interviews with Hanson himself, archival footage, and stylish dramatizations, Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel recounts the shocking transformation of a celebrated athlete into a high-profile drug trafficker—and the inevitable fall that followed.
