ABTV Loves The Bryants

This week  AfterBuzz TV Loves The Bryants revisits Game 1 of the 2009 Western Conference Finals, as well as the announcement of Kobe Bryant’s newest novel shared by wife, Vanessa Bryant through an Instagram post on Thursday evening.

Flash back to this week in 2009, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers battled Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets in Game 1 of the NBA Western Conference Finals. In a tight competition between the two stars, Bryant came out with the edge tossing up a 40 point game while Anthony finished with 39.

In an Instagram post by Bleacher Report, fans were reminded that Bryant later referred to Anthony as the player he enjoyed guarding the most. “He was the most difficult because of his size and speed,” said Bryant.

Now, while we fell in love with what the Mamba did on the basketball court, it’s what he did off of it that left an impact.

Even after he’s gone, the Mamba legacy is carried on by his wife Vanessa. In fact, on Thursday, she revealed through Instagram her husband’s newest book, Geese Are Never Swans

Her caption introduced the book and referred to it as one of her favorite novels created by her husband.

“Readers will meet his newest character Gus Bennett, an aspiring Olympic swimmer facing tough issues that he must overcome in order to win in the pool,” wrote Vanessa.

She added that the novel “perfectly highlights the healing nature that lies within sports.” The book will focus specifically on the swimmer’s struggle with mental health.

I find it amazing that the book is being released this summer, especially in a world that currently has sports on a pause.

Athletes from all over can attest to the claim that sports have healing properties. The world saw the biggest example last Sunday night at the conclusion of ESPN’s The Last Dance, as Steve Kerr disclosed how he dove deeper into basketball to help heal after the murder of his father.

Additionally, we were all witness to the healing power of sports during Lebron James’ speech prior to the first game following the death of Kobe Bryant. Fans from Los Angeles, fans from all over the world, fans of the Mamba were able to heal because of that game and moment.

Sports have always been an outlet for most. A place to completely forget about the struggles of your reality and just sink in to watch a beautiful curveball sink right in the inside seam as the umpire calls strike out, or maybe it’s the crack of the bat as the ball sails over the fence. Maybe your peace comes from watching your favorite running back breaking tackles to find the endzone, or a massive sack on the quarterback you hate. Maybe it’s the swoosh of the net as the ball sinks through or the squeak of sneakers on the court. Maybe, it’s just being surrounded by other fans and the feeling of belonging.

Whatever your “it” is, sports heal.

I can only imagine the wisdom Kobe Bryant will share in his book. From the way he played the game of basketball to his interactions with his family, especially his daughters, the Mamba Mentality was a unique one. And one, I have no doubt oozes throughout Geese Are Never Swans.

According to Granity Studios, the novel was written with artists in the mental health community, such as psychologist Eva Clark – who wrote alongside Bryant. The book is also in partnership with organizations such as The Hidden Opponent and The Michael Phelps Foundation.

“Whether goose or swan, I have wings and I’ll fly.”

Vanessa included the book will be out on July 21st, but available for pre-order now at
