Tyler Perry is set to be a pioneer on the post-coronavirus production frontier. The media mogul spoke with Deadline back in April about his plans to begin production again in early July.

Perry’s BET show The Oval was set to begin production on March 16, right as Covid-19 began to disrupt workflow. He went ahead and suspended production’s start a week before the stay-at-home orders for Atlanta, where Perry’s studio is, were announced. But he also immediately started looking ahead for ways to restart the project.

Perry shared with Deadline, “Many people in Georgia depend on these jobs for their livelihood. I started thinking about what a return would look like and how I could create a safe environment so people could work again with some peace of mind.” On July 8, Perry will be turning that thought into action, first by beginning production on season 2 of Sistas and then following that with production on season 2 of The Oval.

Perry’s plan incorporates a consistent testing regimen for all cast and crew, flying everyone to the studio on his private jet and then housing them on the 330-acre lot of Tyler Perry studios. Once an army base, the now studio lot is the perfect space to help facilitate social distancing, and has the ability to serve as the cast and crew’s soul residence.

Perry’s plan will certainly serve as a blueprint for his fellow producers as the entertainment industry moves towards reopening. With testing, isolation, and housing for the entire show, Perry is paving the way for future productions. Beginning on July 8, we’ll be able to look at the production of Sistas season 2, and gain insight into what Hollywood’s future may look like.
